Are Worms Good for Plants? When They Help—and When They Don’t

Earthworms can improve soil processes in cultivated gardens, but adding them is unnecessary. Species and setting matter—especially with invasive jumping worms.

Common earthworms can benefit garden soil by making channels and leaving nutrient-rich castings, but plants do not need worms to grow well. Don’t buy or move worms into a garden: the wrong species, especially invasive jumping worms, can damage soil and native habitats.

How earthworms can help garden soil

Earthworms are soil animals, not plant food in the direct sense. As they burrow, they create channels that can improve soil aeration and water infiltration. Their castings can contribute to soil aggregates and make nutrients more available. These effects depend on the species and its setting; seeing worms is not a guarantee that a plant will thrive. The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension explains these benefits and their limits in its guidance on whether to put earthworms in a garden.

Should you add worms to a garden or raised bed?

No. In a suitable garden, worms may arrive naturally, and healthy plants can grow even where worms are absent. University of Maine Cooperative Extension likewise advises that adding worms is unnecessary when soil is in good condition. Rather than buying or transferring worms, improve the conditions that support soil life:

  • Add organic matter such as compost or composted manure.
  • Use mulch and avoid unnecessary tillage.
  • Base fertilizer or lime applications on soil-test results.

Worms tend to be more common in moist, loamy soil. Dry, sandy soil with little organic matter may support fewer. That is not, by itself, a reason to introduce worms; focus on suitable soil and plant-care practices instead.

Why species and setting matter

Worms and setting What they do Practical response
Common earthworms in cultivated beds Burrowing can aid aeration and water movement; castings can contribute to soil structure and nutrient availability. Support healthy soil; don’t add worms as a requirement.
Earthworms in forests or woodland edges Introduced species can consume leaf litter and change soil structure, nutrient cycling, and habitat for native plants. Effects depend on species and location. Do not move potentially infested soil, plants, compost, or mulch into natural areas.
Jumping worms in gardens or natural areas These invasive worms feed near the surface, consume organic matter, and can leave grainy castings. Prevent their spread; do not buy, sell, or release known-infested worms or material.

Some forests developed without earthworms, while other regions have native earthworm species. The ecological risk therefore depends on where you are and which species is present—not simply on whether a worm is found in the soil. UNH Extension discusses these regional differences in its garden guidance.

How to recognize and prevent jumping worms

Jumping worms, including species in the genus Amynthas, are also called snake worms or crazy worms. UNH Extension identifies vigorous movement and grainy, coffee-ground-like castings near the soil surface as clues. They can rapidly consume mulch and other surface organic matter. UConn Extension also warns of harm to soil structure and plant communities.

Prevention is the recommended approach. Before bringing plants, compost, mulch, or topsoil home, inspect them for worms or signs of infestation. Don’t buy, sell, or release material known to be infested. UNH Extension reports that proven controls are not currently available; do not assume a treatment will eliminate them. See its jumping worm identification and prevention guidance and UConn Extension’s overview of jumping worms.

Vermicomposting is different from adding worms outdoors

If your goal is to turn kitchen scraps into a soil amendment, indoor vermicomposting is an optional project—not a step needed to grow plants. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes using a worm bin with bedding such as shredded paper or leaves and plant-based kitchen scraps. The finished vermicompost can be used with houseplants or garden soil. Keep the bin separate from outdoor worm introduction; the guidance does not support releasing composting worms into a garden. See Iowa State’s guide to creating and using vermicompost.
