A quick-action 45-degree miter sled helps make repeatable angled cuts in wide stock for frames, boxes, and similar assemblies. You can build the WOOD Magazine design or consider a ready-made Rockler sled—but first check that the sled fits your saw’s miter slot and that its workholding suits the stock you plan to cut.
How a quick-action 45-degree miter sled works
The sled carries stock against an angled reference while it travels in the table saw’s miter slot. WOOD Magazine’s design is intended to cut 45-degree miters in wide stock without tilting the blade for each workpiece cut: the blade is tilted to shape the sled base, then returned to 90 degrees for operation. See the WOOD Magazine plan, updated July 10, 2023.
The goal for a square-corner assembly is a complementary pair of cuts that add up to 90 degrees. Rockler describes a one-piece fence with opposing faces based on a 90-degree angle: cut one piece against the leading face and its mate against the trailing face. The geometry helps establish complementary miters, but does not guarantee a perfect joint; setup, workpiece condition, and cutting execution still matter. Rockler explains the principle in “Cutting the Perfect Miter,” dated July 15, 2022.
Build the WOOD Magazine sled
The plan uses a base, miter-slot guide, angled wedges, top plate, T-track and screw cleat, adjustable fence, and hold-down. Its published sequence is:

- Table Saw Miter Sled: This is the perfect table saw sled, no adjustments needed! Simply cut one piece on the leading face, one on the trailing face, and voila! Since both pieces reference off a perfect 90-degree angle, the miters will fit perfectly.
- 45 Degree Miter Sled: This table saw sled system gives you an exact 45-degree cut every time. Our table saw miter is great for picture frames or anytime accurate corner. Miters cuts are needed.
- Adjusting Miter Track Fit: Use a 7/64" hex wrench (not included) to advance the nylon set screws in the Rockler 45 degree miter sled bar until you achieve a smooth, no-slop fit in your saw’s miter track.
- Standard Slot: Through slots in the base allow you to securely clamp moldings at table level. This table saw miter sled fits standard 3/8" x 3/4" miter slots.
- Easy To Use: The table saw accessories miter can be easily drilled to add extended fences and stops. Pre-installed adjustable nylon pins provide a no-slop fit to the miter track.
- Cut the sled base slightly oversize. Tilt the saw blade to 45 degrees and cut the bevel on the base.
- Return the blade to 90 degrees. Place the miter-slot guide in the saw slot, position the base against the blade body to square it, and fasten the base to the guide.
- Use the bevel as a guide when mounting the 45-degree wedges.
- Cut a groove in the oversize top plate, then install the T-track and T-track screw cleat.
- Attach the fence to the top plate using the slots for adjustment, then attach the top plate to the wedges.
- Slide the assembly until its edge touches the saw table and trim the excess with the blade still at 90 degrees.
- Assemble and attach the hold-down. The plan describes it as securing the workpiece against the fence and keeping it from slipping toward the blade.
The plan also describes cutting spline slots by turning the workpiece over and adjusting blade height. Consult its diagrams and dimensions before making a cut list; the plan’s sequence alone does not establish every measurement. WOOD’s overview, “3 Great Tablesaw Jigs,” updated November 30, 2024, also features the jig.
Buy a ready-made sled if the slot fits
Rockler’s product page lists a 45 Degree Miter Sled with a polycarbonate body, adjustable nylon pins for a no-slop miter-slot fit, and through-slots for clamping. Its listed compatibility is a 3/8 × 3/4-inch miter slot. The listed sled dimensions are 5-1/2 inches wide by 10-3/8 inches long, with 7-1/2-inch clamping faces. Check your saw’s actual slot dimensions and the manufacturer’s current specifications before buying. Rockler notes that the sled can be drilled for extended fences and stops.

Build or buy: what to compare
| Consideration | Shop-built WOOD plan | Rockler ready-made sled |
|---|---|---|
| Miter-slot fit | Uses a miter-slot guide; confirm compatibility with your saw. The plan’s source summary does not establish a universal slot-size specification. | Listed for a 3/8 × 3/4-inch miter slot; verify your saw and the current manufacturer specification. |
| Stock capacity | The plan does not establish a universal capacity. Assess the support and clamping for your stock and setup. | Product dimensions are 5-1/2 inches wide by 10-3/8 inches long, with 7-1/2-inch clamping faces; these dimensions do not by themselves establish a maximum workpiece capacity. |
| Fence and repeatability | You assemble and adjust the fence and base; the plan uses slots for fence adjustment. | Opposing reference faces provide the ready-made design’s mitering reference; Rockler also notes it can be drilled for extended fences and stops. |
| Workholding | The plan includes a hold-down to secure the workpiece against the fence. | The product page lists through-slots for clamping; choose suitable workholding for your stock and setup. |
| Effort | Requires making and assembling the base, guide, wedges, top plate, T-track and cleat, fence, and hold-down. | Ready-made, but still requires checking slot compatibility and arranging suitable clamping. |
Use the sled within the saw maker’s instructions
A sled does not replace the table-saw manufacturer’s operating instructions. Follow the instructions for your saw and any applicable guidance for the jig and workpiece. The WOOD plan’s description of a hold-down is a design feature, not a complete safety procedure or a certification of the setup.
