You can build a useful DIY home automation system with a controller, a few compatible devices, and one simple automation. A practical beginner route is to use Home Assistant as the controller, begin with plug-in devices such as a light and motion sensor, and confirm each device’s protocol and exact feature support before buying. You do not need dedicated Home Assistant hardware, but a controller helps bring devices and automations together.

What you need for a simple home automation system

A small setup has three parts: a controller that coordinates devices, compatible smart devices, and a network connection or radio that those devices can use. For example, a motion sensor can trigger a light through an automation, if the controller supports both devices and the needed function.

  • Controller: Home Assistant can run on its own Green hub, user-supplied hardware such as a Raspberry Pi or mini PC, or a virtual machine. The software itself is free, according to the Home Assistant FAQ.
  • Devices: Start with just a few devices whose exact models and capabilities are supported by your controller.
  • Connectivity: Devices may use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, Zigbee, or a vendor cloud. The right choice depends on the devices and controller you select; a separate radio or network component may be required.

For a first build, stick to plug-in devices and low-voltage setup. Electrical wiring requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the sources cited here do not establish local code or safety requirements for hard-wired equipment.

Choose a controller: ready-made hub or self-installed software

Home Assistant describes its Green as an official plug-and-play smart-home hub. Its FAQ estimates about 15 minutes for basic Green setup and one to two hours for a typical custom installation. These are Home Assistant’s estimates, not independently measured times, and the actual effort depends on your network and devices.

Home Assistant Green Vendor-described plug-and-play hub; Home Assistant estimates basic setup at about 15 minutes. Hardware cost applies; current price is not stated in the Green documentation. Someone who wants a dedicated controller and less installation work.
Home Assistant on your own hardware or a virtual machine Uses a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine you supply. Home Assistant estimates a typical custom setup at one to two hours; the time is not a benchmark, and hardware cost depends on what you already own. Someone comfortable choosing, setting up, and maintaining the host device.

Green is only one way to run Home Assistant. Compare the setup effort, hardware you already have, protocols you need, local-control requirements, and willingness to maintain the system. The available official documentation does not establish a universal best controller or current hardware prices.

Understand Matter, Thread, and Wi-Fi before buying

Matter is an application-level smart-home standard: it defines how supported devices and controllers communicate at the application layer. Wi-Fi and Thread are different kinds of network technologies used to carry that communication. Google’s Matter overview explains the distinction.

Matter

A Matter logo is a useful starting clue, not a guarantee that a device will provide every feature you want in your chosen controller. Check the exact device model, the controller’s current support, and whether the specific category and function you need are supported. Home Assistant documents commissioning requirements and warns that compatibility or feature gaps can occur in its Matter documentation.

Thread

Thread is a low-power mesh network, not a standalone control system. A Thread device needs an application protocol such as Matter or Apple HomeKit, and Thread devices need a Thread border router to connect the Thread mesh to the local IP network. Home Assistant’s Thread documentation describes these roles.

Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is an optional radio product for Zigbee or Thread use with Green, but Home Assistant’s Green documentation says Thread support is under development. Its Thread-border-router guidance describes manual steps and work-in-progress integration. Do not assume the adapter is a turnkey Thread setup; check the current documentation for the exact configuration you plan to use.

Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Some Matter devices communicate over Wi-Fi or Ethernet instead of Thread. Home Assistant says Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet can work with Green when its Matter integration and server are configured. For Matter operation in Google Home, Google says IPv6 must be enabled; that is a platform-specific requirement, not a universal instruction for every controller. See Google’s Matter preparation guidance.

Build a first automation in manageable steps

  1. Pick the controller. Choose Green if you want Home Assistant’s documented plug-and-play option, or install Home Assistant on hardware or a virtual machine you can maintain.
  2. Check your network before adding devices. Keep the first setup simple. Home Assistant’s Matter troubleshooting guidance calls out IPv6 and multicast visibility between the network and Home Assistant host. Check your controller’s current networking instructions rather than changing router settings by guesswork.
  3. Choose a small device pair. A motion sensor and a light make a clear first example. Confirm that your controller supports both exact models and the action you want before purchase; this example is not a compatibility claim about any particular products.
  4. Verify the protocol and setup requirements. For Matter, Home Assistant advises checking for the Matter logo, the Wi-Fi or Thread logo, and a QR code or numeric setup code. Confirm phone and network prerequisites in the controller’s instructions.
  5. Connect and configure the devices. Follow the manufacturer’s and controller’s setup process. Add devices incrementally so a connection or compatibility issue is easier to isolate.
  6. Create one automation. Set a condition such as motion detected and an action such as turning on the supported light. Test it under the conditions you expect to use, then adjust the trigger or action if needed.

Home Assistant recommends starting with a few devices and a simple dashboard, then expanding. That makes it easier to learn how your controller handles device status and automations before adding more protocols or rooms.

Check these points before checkout

  • Exact model and feature: A brand name or Matter logo alone does not establish that the device’s particular features work with your chosen controller. Check its current compatibility information and supported device category.
  • Network or radio: Identify whether it uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, Zigbee, or another connection, and whether your controller needs an additional radio or border router.
  • Local or cloud operation: Determine whether the device can be controlled locally or depends on a vendor’s cloud service, especially if offline operation matters to you.
  • Commissioning prerequisites: For Matter, check the setup code, phone requirements, and network requirements in the relevant platform documentation.
  • Features across platforms: Support can vary by controller and device type, and platform support evolves at different times. Google’s guidance notes that device-type support does not necessarily arrive simultaneously across platforms.

Will the system work if the internet goes down?

It depends on how the controller and devices communicate. Home Assistant says devices using local protocols can continue to work without internet access. Devices that depend on a vendor cloud may stop working, and some remote-access or voice-assistant features may be unavailable. Check the behavior of each exact device and feature; “smart home” does not automatically mean either local-only or cloud-dependent.

Where to expand after the first automation

Once the first device pair works reliably, add devices one at a time and choose each addition based on a specific need: another light, a sensor, or a dashboard view. Before moving to a new protocol such as Thread or Zigbee, verify the controller’s current support and any required border router or radio. Home Assistant’s official guidance and feature status can change, so consult its current Matter, Thread, and Green documentation when planning a particular configuration.
