TK Elevator’s Testturm in Rottweil, Germany, is a purpose-built elevator research and testing facility—not a conventional skyscraper filled with homes or offices. Its height gives engineers long shafts for testing elevator systems designed for tall buildings, including at speeds the operator says reach up to 18 m/s. The headline’s “middle of a forest” and “only elevators” descriptions are not quite literal: the tower is in the Rottweil region, and it also has a public observation platform and visitor facilities.

Why build an elevator tower this tall?

Elevators for high-rise buildings must travel long distances and operate at high speeds. A tall test facility gives engineers room to develop, test, and certify systems under conditions relevant to vertical transportation in skyscrapers. TK Elevator describes the Testturm as a facility for testing elevator innovations and supporting the development of systems for future tall buildings.

That makes its unusual form a practical response to its job. Rather than dividing the building into occupied office or residential floors, the facility concentrates on vertical test space and the equipment needed to evaluate elevator systems.

What is inside the Testturm?

TK Elevator says the 246-meter tower contains 12 test shafts within a shell 21 meters in diameter. The operator says elevator systems can be tested there at speeds of up to 18 meters per second. These are the manufacturer’s stated facility specifications, not independent performance measurements.

Three of the shafts, each 100 meters high, are dedicated to the company’s MULTI system. TK Elevator describes MULTI as a cable-less elevator concept using multiple cabins and magnetic-levitation technology, with cabins intended to travel vertically and horizontally. Those details describe the operator’s technology; they do not establish independent performance or current market availability.

How the tower is designed and clad

TK Elevator credits architect Helmut Jahn and engineer Werner Sobek with the tower’s design. A twisted, PTFE-coated fiberglass fabric membrane wraps the concrete shaft. The operator says the membrane admits light, protects the structure from solar radiation and wind, and helps optimize aerodynamics to reduce oscillations.

The fabric exterior is therefore more than a visual feature: it is part of the tower’s approach to weather protection and aerodynamic performance. Those functional benefits are claims made by TK Elevator.

Is it really in the middle of a forest?

The phrase makes for a striking image, but the official location information identifies the tower as being in Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg. The available location details establish it as a landmark in the region; they do not establish that it literally stands in the middle of a forest.

Can visitors go up the tower?

Yes. The facility includes a public observation platform at 232 meters, and TK Elevator identifies it as Germany’s highest observation platform. The platform is 14 meters below the tower’s stated overall height of 246 meters; the two figures refer to different things.

The operator also provides visitor information, including access guidance, restrictions, directions, and opening information. Because visitor logistics can change, check the official Testturm visit page before making the trip. The address listed by TK Elevator is Berner Feld 60, 78628 Rottweil, Germany.
