For an easy first flower bed, try zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, calendula, or nasturtiums. Choose varieties that suit your sunlight and available space, then use your seed packet or plant label—and local frost guidance—to decide when and how to plant. Most of these are annuals: they flower in one growing season and usually need replanting the next year, though some may self-seed.
Choose flowers for your space
Before buying seeds, check how much sun the site gets, whether the soil drains well, and how much room the mature plants will have. A sunny, accessible spot near a water source is a practical choice. These five annuals offer different shapes and uses, but their growth habits and timing vary by variety and region.
| Flower | Useful for | Growing considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Zinnias | Colorful beds, containers, and cut flowers | They are frost-sensitive, warm-season annuals. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends warm, sheltered conditions. University of Minnesota Extension favors full sun and well-drained soil in its regional guidance. Check the packet for spacing and local sowing timing. |
| Sunflowers | A tall focal point or backdrop | Varieties differ greatly in mature size. The RHS lists a possible height range of 60 cm to 3 m; check the chosen variety’s label and allow for its height and spread. |
| Cosmos | An airy, colorful display in a sunny bed | Illinois Extension describes cosmos as an easy-care annual for full sun and well-drained, relatively low-fertility soil. Too much water or fertilizer can reduce flowering. Its local profile is not a universal calendar or height guide. |
| Calendula (pot marigold) | Orange or yellow daisy-like flowers | It can grow in full sun or partial shade and light, free-draining soil. The RHS describes spring or autumn sowing and recommends deadheading to prolong bloom. |
| Nasturtium | A spreading or climbing display, depending on variety | Flowers may be yellow, orange, or red. Habit, spacing, and timing vary, so use the seed packet or plant label rather than assuming every nasturtium needs the same support or room. |
For cutting flowers, plan for a succession of blooms rather than planting everything for the same flowering window. Seeds generally cost less and offer more variety than young plants, while transplants save seed-starting time and indoor space.
Check local frost timing before planting
There is no reliable single planting date for every garden. Frost dates and spring temperatures differ by region, and the sources behind these recommendations cover the UK, Illinois, and Minnesota—not one shared climate. Hardy annuals may be sown outdoors where local conditions permit; half-hardy and tender annuals are usually started under cover or planted outdoors after frost danger has passed.

Illinois Extension classifies zinnias as tender annuals and advises planting on or a few weeks after the local frost-free date, once air and soil have warmed. The RHS similarly advises waiting until after the last frost to plant half-hardy or tender annuals outside. Check your local extension service’s guidance, a local frost calendar, and the instructions for your specific seed or plant.
For a regional example, University of Minnesota Extension advises Minnesota gardeners to direct-sow zinnias when soil is at least 70°F, or transplant once soil reaches 60°F; its guide also recommends at least eight hours of sun. Those are Minnesota-specific instructions, not universal thresholds for other climates or varieties.

Prepare a small bed
- Choose the site. Select a spot that gets suitable light for your flowers and is convenient to reach with a watering can or hose. A soil test can help you understand the existing soil before adding amendments. A raised bed is another option where native soil is poor or easier access is important.
- Clear and prepare the surface. Remove weeds and rake the soil to a fine, crumbly texture for sowing. Avoid working soil when it is very wet; Illinois Extension warns that doing so can damage soil structure.
- Follow the packet for depth and spacing. Seeds planted too deeply or crowded together may struggle. Because seed size, variety, and growing habit differ, use the seed packet or plant label rather than a generic spacing rule.
- Decide between direct sowing and young plants. Sow outdoors when the flower and local conditions are suited to it. Tender annuals can be started under cover and moved outside after frost risk has passed. Buying young plants is a straightforward alternative if you lack space or time to raise seedlings.
Plant and care for your flowers
Keep seeds and young plants from drying out
Water the seedbed as needed to keep it from drying while seeds germinate and seedlings establish. Water young plants regularly, checking the soil rather than following a fixed schedule. Once established, annuals need attention during hot or dry spells. Containers dry faster than garden beds, so check them more often in summer.
Weed and deadhead as flowers grow
Remove weeds while they are small so they do not compete with young flowers. For varieties that respond well, remove faded blooms to encourage a longer display; the RHS recommends this for calendula and many annuals. Check a plant’s growing guidance if you are unsure whether deadheading is useful.

Annual flowers complete their life cycle in one growing season, so plan to sow or plant again if you want the same display next year. Some annuals may self-seed, but that is not the same as reliably returning like a perennial; seedlings may appear in different places or not at all.
