The Philips LatteGo 5500 is designed to make a broad range of bean-to-cup drinks with minimal fuss: choose a recipe, adjust it to taste, and let the machine grind, brew, and froth. Its strongest case is for one or two coffee drinkers who want plenty of one-touch choices and a milk carafe that is easy to remove and clean. Its limits matter too: the water tank and bean hopper are modest, the milk spout does not swivel, and its iced recipes use hot-brewed coffee poured over ice—not cold extraction.
What is the Philips LatteGo 5500?
The EP5547/90 is a fully automatic espresso machine that grinds fresh beans and prepares coffee and milk drinks at the touch of a button. Philips lists 20 programmed drinks, four saved user profiles plus a guest profile, and 12 grinder settings. The recipes include espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato, Americano, caffè crema, caffè latte, hot water, and iced versions of several drinks. Philips’ EP5547/90 product listing also specifies a ceramic grinder, removable brew group, guided descaling, and dishwasher-safe LatteGo parts.
Specifications vary by regional model suffix. For the UK-listed EP5547/90, Philips gives a 275 g bean container, 1.8 L water tank, 0.26 L milk container, 230 V / 50 Hz power, and a two-year warranty. Check the listing and manual for the exact variant sold where you live rather than assuming those details apply to every EP5547 model.
How easy is the LatteGo 5500 to use day to day?
One-touch choice and saved preferences
The 20 presets give a household more variety than a machine limited to espresso and a few milk drinks. Saved profiles can make regular choices quicker for several users, while the 12 grinder settings and drink controls allow some adjustment. The product listing establishes the preset count and profiles, but not that every recipe offers identical customization options.

Milk drinks and cup positioning
TechRadar’s hands-on review describes LatteGo as a two-part carafe with no tubes. It is filled while attached to the machine, and markings help measure milk for one or two drinks. The reviewer found the assembly straightforward to rinse by hand or wash in a dishwasher. It is not designed to keep leftover milk in the refrigerator, so pour unused milk back into its original container rather than storing the carafe as a milk jug. TechRadar’s review also reports that dairy and oat milk foamed well in hot drinks, while foam in iced drinks was less impressive.
The milk spout is fixed rather than angled. TechRadar found that the cup needs careful positioning to avoid spills; a wider cup can help align it beneath both the coffee and milk outlets. That small placement task is a meaningful trade-off if the priority is a completely hands-off routine.

Does the Philips 5500 make real cold brew?
No. The iced presets brew hot coffee over ice. That cools the drink, but melting ice can dilute it. TechRadar notes that selecting a stronger coffee may help compensate, but this is still an iced hot-brew recipe rather than cold-extracted coffee. If cold extraction is essential, compare machines that explicitly use that method.
How much coffee and water does it hold?
For the EP5547/90, Philips lists a 275 g bean hopper and 1.8 L water tank. TechRadar considers those capacities relatively small and sees the machine as better suited to an individual or couple than to frequent batches for a larger household. The water tank slides out from the front, which helps when the machine is placed beneath a counter. The hopper is on top, though, so low cabinet clearance can make refilling awkward.

Philips gives the machine’s dimensions as 246 mm wide, 371 mm high, and 433 mm long, with a weight of 8 kg. The narrow 24.6 cm width may help with counter space, but measure the available height and allow room to reach the top hopper as well as pull out the tank. Philips lists the dimensions and weight for this regional variant.
What cleaning and maintenance does it need?
Routine milk-system care
Philips says the two-part LatteGo system has no tubes and can be cleaned under a tap or in a dishwasher. It is not automatically cleaned, however, so the milk parts still need complementary cleaning after use. Consult the manual for the exact cleaning routine for your regional model.

Descaling and other care
Philips lists an AquaClean filter as an included accessory for the EP5547/90 and says owners can make up to 5,000 cups without descaling when using AquaClean. Treat that as a conditional manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee: Philips bases it on eight filter replacements and says the actual number depends on drink choice, rinsing, and cleaning habits. The product listing also names coffee-oil removal tablets, espresso-machine descaler, a cleaning brush, and brew-group lubricant as related accessories. - A good fit: one or two people who want a wide choice of one-touch hot and iced recipes, save preferences for household members, and value a detachable milk assembly that is quick to rinse.
- Less suitable: households making frequent batches, anyone expecting cold-extracted coffee from the iced presets, or users who do not want to position a cup carefully under the fixed milk spout.
TechRadar’s comparison notes that the 5500 offers 20 presets versus 12 on the 4400 series. That establishes a difference in recipe count, not a complete head-to-head verdict; compare the specific models’ capacities, milk-system routine, customization, footprint, cold-drink method, maintenance requirements, regional warranty, and price before choosing.

Verdict
The LatteGo 5500 makes its broad recipe selection and detachable milk system the centre of the experience. For a small household that mostly wants hot drinks and values quick rinsing, those are practical advantages. The compromises are equally clear: relatively modest bean and water capacity, a milk spout that requires careful cup placement, and iced drinks made by brewing over ice. It is easiest to recommend when those limits match the way you actually make coffee.
