Pinball restoration can mean anything from fixing a fault so a machine plays reliably to a full mechanical and cosmetic overhaul. Start with the exact machine’s manual, assess its condition before replacing parts, and treat wiring, backbox circuitry, and stored high voltage as serious hazards. If you cannot safely identify or work on those circuits, leave that work to a qualified pinball technician.
What pinball restoration involves
A restoration aims to return a machine’s mechanisms, lights, and other components to their intended operation. Depending on the machine and the owner’s goals, it may also include cleaning and polishing, replacing worn parts, and work on the playfield, lower cabinet, or backbox. The scope should follow the machine’s condition—not a universal checklist. Intermittent faults may persist even after a particular repair, so a single fix is not proof that the entire machine is reliable.
Choose a restoration scope before starting
- Functional repair: Focus on faults that prevent safe, dependable play, such as failed switches, lamps, or mechanisms.
- Mechanical service: Inspect and service moving assemblies, including flippers, pop bumpers, slingshots, targets, and ball paths; replace worn consumables as needed.
- Cosmetic restoration: Clean or refinish the playfield, plastics, backglass, cabinet, or metalwork only after considering the materials and how much original finish you want to preserve.
- System or board work: Use documentation for the machine’s specific manufacturer, model, and system. Electromechanical and solid-state machines can differ in layout and service procedures.
A professional shop-out checklist may include rebuilding flippers, checking lamps and connectors, replacing worn rubbers, cleaning parts, inspecting grounds and fuses, setting the machine, and play-testing it. That is one provider’s service outline, not a universal standard or a guarantee against future faults. Restoration Pinball’s checklist is a useful example of the breadth such work can have.
Safety comes before inspection or repair
Use the manual for the exact machine and follow its power-down instructions. In its SPIKE-system manual, Stern instructs operators to turn off the machine and disconnect the line cord before servicing switches, coils, lamps, or device wiring. Stern also warns that potentially lethal voltages are present in the backbox. Those warnings are specific to the documented system; older machines and other generations may have different layouts and hazards. Read the Stern SPIKE manual rather than assuming its procedures apply to every pinball machine.

- Do not service wiring or components while the machine is powered.
- Do not assume that unplugging the machine makes every circuit safe. Display power circuitry can retain high voltage after power is removed, and mishandling it can also damage display components.
- If you are not qualified to assess or safely discharge a circuit, do not probe or repair it. Have a qualified technician handle board, display-power, and other hazardous electrical work.
- Do not bypass fuses or substitute a different rating. Check the machine’s documentation and have unexplained blown fuses or damaged wiring diagnosed.

Inspect the machine in practical work areas
Power and wiring
Check the power cord and grounding condition, fuse ratings, connectors, and visible signs of heat damage. A burned connector, questionable ground, or recurring blown fuse needs diagnosis rather than a cosmetic fix. Electrical inspection is not an invitation to work on energized or charged circuits.

Boards and displays
Use the machine’s manual and built-in diagnostics where applicable. Look for corrosion or physical damage, and check connectors as directed by the documentation. Board and display-power work may involve stored high voltage; refer that work to a qualified technician if you cannot establish that the circuit is safe.
Playfield mechanisms and wear parts
Inspect flippers, switches, pop bumpers, slingshots, targets, plungers, and the ball’s path for worn, damaged, or unreliable parts. Rubbers and coil sleeves may need replacement, while lamps and other components should be repaired or replaced according to their condition. A model-specific rubber ring kit can be useful, but verify that it matches the machine before ordering. Stern’s maintenance instructions also advise identifying worn rubber parts and repairing them while cleaning the playfield; follow the instructions for the applicable machine. Playfield, cabinet, and cosmetics
Clean and inspect the playfield, plastics, backglass, cabinet, and metalwork. Choose cleaning or refinishing methods that suit the material and your preservation goals; aggressive treatment can compromise original surfaces. Cosmetic work should not distract from unresolved electrical or mechanical faults.

After repairs and reassembly, check the machine’s setup and play-test it to confirm that switches, lamps, flippers, and other mechanisms work as intended. A test can reveal faults that were not apparent during a visual inspection, but it cannot guarantee that intermittent problems will never return. If a fault recurs or the machine behaves unpredictably, stop play and diagnose it using the manual or with qualified service.
