BHP announced plans to demolish Port Hedland’s closed Pier Hotel and replace it with a community green space featuring picnic tables and native vegetation. The company said demolition would begin in April 2025 and the park was expected to open in early 2026, but those were projections in an announcement reported on 24 April 2025—not confirmation that either milestone occurred.
What is planned for the Pier Hotel site?
BHP said the proposed space would include picnic tables and native vegetation, with a “walk down memory lane” to acknowledge the hotel’s history. A company spokesperson described the aim as “a family-friendly green space for everyone in the community to enjoy.” The announcement did not set out a detailed design, project cost, access arrangements or a formal heritage interpretation plan.
The hotel closed in July 2024, and BHP bought it soon afterward. In its April 2025 report, ABC News said demolition was due to start that month and the park was expected to open early in 2026. Those dates describe the plan as announced; the report does not establish whether demolition or opening later took place. ABC News, 24 April 2025.
Why the site matters to Port Hedland
The Pier Hotel was a long-standing pub in Port Hedland, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. ABC News, citing the Town of Port Hedland heritage inventory, reported that it was first built in the 1890s, when the settlement had only two hotels, a blacksmith’s shop and a jetty. The building was reconstructed by the 1960s. ABC described it as 130 years old in 2025; that is an approximate characterization, not an independently established exact age.

For some residents, its value was also in the social life it hosted. Arnold Carter, who had lived in Port Hedland since 1962, recalled: “You’d only be down there about half an hour and your troubles would disappear.” George Dann, who worked on the town’s waterfront for 45 years, remembered leaving cigarettes and money on the bar while he went dancing and finding them there when he returned. He also recalled paying $1.20 per jug in the 1960s; that figure is his personal recollection reported by ABC, not a verified price record.
Why the park plan drew criticism
Some interviewees in ABC’s report considered the proposed park an underwhelming replacement or worried about losing the site’s history. Gloria Jacobs said she would have preferred a backpackers’ accommodation business or tourism centre, and argued that the loss of history was upsetting. These are views expressed by individuals interviewed for the report, not evidence of a consensus among Port Hedland residents.

ABC also noted development restrictions on the land. That context matters when weighing alternative uses, but the report does not detail the restrictions or establish whether a backpackers’ facility or tourism centre would be feasible. It also does not provide competing designs, costs or a representative survey of community opinion. The central difference is one of purpose: BHP’s announcement described a public green space with a historical nod, while Jacobs’s suggestions would make tourism or accommodation the primary use.

The Pier Hotel was reportedly given the “world’s toughest pub” label by a journalist from a UK publication in the 1970s. It is a reputation, not a verified ranking. ABC also described a story of 86 stabbings in one night as an unfounded local rumour; it should not be treated as a factual incident count.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain
- Confirmed in the April 2025 report: the pub closed in July 2024, BHP bought it soon afterward, and BHP announced plans for a green space with picnic tables, native vegetation and a reference to the hotel’s legacy.
- Not confirmed by that report: whether demolition began as planned, whether the park opened in early 2026, or what the finished site looks like.
