What is the PlanetCare washing-machine filter?
PlanetCare 2.0 is an external microfiber filter that attaches to a washing machine’s drain hose. It is a retrofit, not a filter built into the washer. What does PlanetCare’s “up to 98%” claim establish?
PlanetCare’s product page claims capture of up to 98% of microfibers and describes the figure as independently lab-tested. The retrieved page passage does not name the laboratory, provide a test protocol or conditions, or link to a dated report. Treat “up to 98%” as PlanetCare’s claim, with the year not stated on the page—not as an independently verifiable result or a guaranteed outcome in every household.

PlanetCare says customers return used cartridges in supplied packaging. The company describes disassembling them in a controlled environment, removing the filtering medium that contains captured fibers, cleaning the remaining cartridge, fitting it with new filter media, and returning it for reuse.

What happens to the captured fibers?
PlanetCare identifies insulation, concrete-weight reinforcement, chemical recycling, and furniture as pilots or possible routes, not proof that each is operating as a regular, established recycling pathway. Its help material also mentions insulation panels and says it is pursuing other approaches. The available company description does not establish that all captured fibers are recycled, that nothing goes to landfill, or that any named route is operating at scale.

How should you compare external and built-in filters?
An external retrofit such as PlanetCare 2.0 connects to a washer’s drain hose; a built-in design integrates filtration into the appliance. The European Commission’s CORDIS record for the Fibrestop project describes work on a built-in filter based on physical capture without chemicals, with cartridge return for recycling as part of the project concept. That record provides context for a different design approach, but does not establish current consumer availability or comparative performance.
