This simple layout method marks the center; it does not guide a drill bit.
Find and mark the center of a dowel
- Trace the end. Hold the dowel end against a piece of paper and trace its circumference with a pencil.
- Cut out the disk. Cut along the traced line to make a paper circle.
- Fold it into quarters. Fold the disk in half, then fold it in half again. The folds’ intersection identifies the circle’s center.
- Transfer the mark. Place the paper disk on the dowel end, align its edge with the dowel’s circumference, and pierce the fold intersection with an awl. The puncture marks the center on the wood.
WOOD Magazine describes this approach as a pencil-and-paper workaround when a center-finding tool is unavailable; its example uses a 1¼-inch dowel, but that is an example rather than a stated size limit or accuracy specification. WOOD Magazine’s instructions were updated May 6, 2025.
Know what the mark does—and does not do
The paper method locates the center of the dowel’s end so you can mark a starting point. It does not hold or align a drill bit. The source does not report a numerical accuracy tolerance or a comparative test, so treat the result as a practical layout mark rather than a guaranteed precision measurement.
An awl is the pointed transfer implement in the described method. It is optional as a purchase: if you do not have one, the essential idea is to transfer the fold intersection to the dowel end with a suitable pointed marking tool.

Choose a tool for the next joinery task
| Task | Appropriate tool or method | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Mark the center of a dowel end | Folded paper disk and a pointed marking tool | Transfers the center of the traced circular end to the dowel. |
| Drill a hole for a dowel joint | Doweling jig | Aligns and guides the drill bit; setup can include workpiece marking, a stop collar, and index pins. See Kreg’s dowel-jig quick-start guide and this doweling-jig reference. |
| Transfer a hole position to a mating workpiece | Dowel centers or center pins | Mark corresponding positions on the second piece after holes are made in the first. See Canadian Woodworking’s dowel-joinery overview. |
These tools address different stages of dowel joinery. Choose based on whether you need an end-center mark, guided drilling, or transfer of mating-hole positions; compatibility and setup depend on the workpiece and dowel size.
