Paper birch (Betula papyrifera) is a deciduous tree native across much of northern North America, best known for its pale, often peeling bark. It is a cold-adapted pioneer species used for wood products, landscaping and restoration, though successful planting depends on matching the tree to local conditions.
What is paper birch?
Paper birch, also called white birch or canoe birch, belongs to the birch family Betulaceae. It is a medium-sized, relatively short-lived tree that grows quickly in open conditions. The USDA Forest Service says it rarely lives more than 140 years.
It is shade-intolerant: after events such as fire or logging, it can establish rapidly on exposed ground and sometimes form nearly pure stands. In older forests, it is more often found in openings. Its foliage, buds and bark are browsed by wildlife, and its seeds are also eaten by animals.
Where does paper birch grow?
Its native range extends across northern North America, from Newfoundland and Labrador west through Canada to northwest Alaska. There are also southern and western populations in areas including the Great Plains, Front Range, Great Lakes, New England and Appalachian Mountains. The range varies among its six intergrading geographic varieties; cultivated trees in places such as Hawaii are not part of its native range.

Paper birch occurs in settings ranging from boreal forest to humid northeastern forests and western mountain sites. It can grow across a variety of soils and terrain, but the USDA Forest Service’s Silvics of North America account describes cool, moist sites with well-drained sandy loam as favorable for development.
How to identify paper birch
The most conspicuous feature is its pale bark, often white and peeling in horizontal strips. The USDA Forest Service field guide calls it “immediately recognizable” for its striking white bark. Leaves are pointed and toothed. Because bark color and form can vary with age, growing conditions and region, use several traits and the tree’s location rather than relying on bark color alone.

- Beautiful white bark that adds a striking contrast to your landscape
- Fast-growing tree that provides quick shade and privacy
- Adaptable to a wide range of soil types and climates
- Elegant, slender form that enhances the aesthetic of any garden
- Low-maintenance tree that thrives with minimal care
Size varies geographically. The USDA Forest Service Fire Effects Information System (FEIS) review reports that mature trees in much of the range commonly reach 70–80 feet (21–24 m) tall, with trunks 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) in diameter. In Alaska, common heights are smaller, about 20–60 feet (6–18 m). These are regional typical dimensions, not a guarantee for an individual tree.
What is paper birch wood and bark used for?
Documented wood uses include veneer, plywood, pulpwood, paper manufacture, furniture, cabinets, specialty items and fuel. The USDA Forest Service FEIS species review also records historical Indigenous uses of bark for canoes, baskets, storage containers, mats, calls, torches and household utensils. These practices varied among peoples and communities; historical accounts should not be taken to describe every community or current practice.

Can you plant paper birch?
Paper birch is used as a landscape tree for its form and pale bark, and in revegetation and soil stabilization on severely disturbed sites. Its shade intolerance makes an open, sunny location more suitable than a deeply shaded one. For a yard or restoration project, check that the local climate is appropriate and choose nursery stock identified as Betula papyrifera and suitable for your region. Provenance matters: a plant sourced for a different climate or region may not be a good match.
The FEIS review describes bare-root or containerized stock at least two years old as having been used for best results in the restoration context it discusses. That is not a universal planting prescription; site conditions and project goals still matter. Ask a regional native-plant nursery or forestry professional about suitable paper birch seedlings and local planting guidance.
