Prune roses as growth begins to resume and the risk of severe frost has passed—not on one universal calendar date. The right “now” depends on your local climate and the kind of rose you have. Pruning at the appropriate time and shaping each rose according to its growth habit can improve structure and support flowering, but it does not guarantee a particular number of blooms.

When should you prune roses?

Use local conditions as your guide: wait until severe freezes are past and growth is about to resume. Pruning too early can stimulate tender new growth that is then damaged by frost, leaving you to prune again. Later pruning can delay the first flush of blooms.

These regional examples show why a date from another climate should not be treated as a rule:

Location Suggested window Qualification
Willamette Valley, western Oregon Mid-February to early March OSU Extension recommends pruning when conditions are conducive to growth; avoid pruning ahead of hard frost or severe weather. OSU Extension: Pruning roses
Higher elevations in eastern and central Oregon April OSU advises waiting until after severe freezes while plants are still dormant. OSU Extension: Rose Care in Central Oregon
Central Oregon Late April or early May The local guide gives this as a general window and cautions against exposing new growth to frost. OSU Extension: Rose Care in Central Oregon
United Kingdom Often February or March RHS gives late winter as a broad guide; colder northern areas may need to wait longer than southern areas, and rose type affects timing. RHS: Rose pruning guide

If your area is not listed, check a local extension service or trusted regional gardening authority for the timing that fits your climate. The dates above are regional examples, not interchangeable recommendations.

Identify the rose before shaping it

Start by removing dead, dying, diseased, crossing, or rubbing growth. After that, the right amount to cut depends on whether you have a bush rose, a climber, or a shrub rose with a particular flowering habit.

Hybrid tea and grandiflora roses

For these bush roses, OSU Extension recommends removing weak or problematic canes, then keeping three to six strong canes. Shorten the selected canes to roughly 12–18 inches. This is regional extension guidance, so account for the plant’s condition and local advice rather than treating the height as mandatory for every rose.

Floribunda roses

Remove interior lateral canes to open the plant and improve airflow. OSU Extension gives a general pruning height of roughly 24–36 inches, while its step-by-step guidance gives 24–26 inches. The recommendations differ, so use them as a range of regional guidance rather than a single required height.

Climbing roses

Do not prune a climber like a compact bush rose. Keep its main canes, remove damaged or unproductive growth, and prune the side branches, or laterals. OSU Extension advises leaving three to five buds on each lateral and arranging the main canes as horizontally as possible, which encourages flowering growth along their length.

How to make a clean pruning cut

  1. Remove problem growth first. Cut out dead, dying, diseased, crossing, and rubbing stems. When removing dead wood, continue until you reach live wood with pale pith.
  2. Choose the bud. Where appropriate, select an outward-facing bud so new growth is directed away from the center of the plant.
  3. Cut just above it. OSU Extension specifies about ¼ inch above the bud; the RHS says no more than 5 mm (¼ in). Angle the cut away from the bud so water drains away from it.
  4. Keep the cut clean. Use sharp, suitable tools rather than crushing a cane, and sanitize blades between plants.

Choose tools for the cane, not the label

  • Bypass hand pruners: Useful for ordinary rose canes within their cutting capacity. OSU Extension says, “The most useful cutting tool for roses, bypass pruners will cut a woody stem up to three-quarters of an inch thick.” OSU Extension: Pruning roses
  • Loppers: Use these for canes too thick for your hand pruners; they are not necessary for every rose.
  • Gloves: Wear sturdy gloves to reduce thorn scratches while handling and clearing canes.
