Proper Winter Hay Storage: Indoor and Outdoor Tips

Store winter hay under a ventilated roof when possible. If it must stay outside, raise bales, cover the stack, manage drainage, and monitor moisture-related heating safely.

The best winter hay storage is indoors, under a weather-tight roof in a well-ventilated, well-drained structure. If a barn or shed is not available, store bales on a raised, dry base, cover them to shed rain and snow, and leave room for air to circulate. Keeping hay dry protects feed quality and also reduces the risk of moisture-related heating and fire.

How to store hay indoors

A barn, shed, or pole structure that keeps precipitation out while allowing ventilation is the preferred option, according to Montana State University Extension (MSU). Protect the stack from moisture at the floor as well as from leaks overhead: MSU warns that concrete can absorb and transfer moisture, so avoid placing hay directly on a damp concrete surface.

University of Illinois Extension recommends leaving space between hay and side walls, allowing gaps in large lots, and keeping at least two feet between bales and rafters. A covered ridge vent is one possible ventilation feature. For storage decisions, Illinois Extension recommends checking bale moisture with a hay moisture probe; a reading is useful information, not a substitute for properly curing hay or managing the storage space.

How to store hay outside without a barn

Choose a well-drained site, away from low spots that collect water and from trees where practical. Raise bales above damp ground using suitable pallets, fence posts, timbers, or a gravel base. A tarp or water-resistant canvas over the stack should have enough overhang to direct runoff away from the lower bales. A cover helps, but it does not correct poor drainage or eliminate moisture coming up from the ground.

Keep air moving around the stack. MSU recommends that uncovered round bales be stored in a single layer, end-to-end, with several feet between rows. Illinois Extension advises avoiding contact between the rounded sides of adjacent bales and arranging rows with drainage and sunlight in mind. Adapt the layout to the site, prevailing weather, equipment access, and safe handling conditions.

What storage losses can you expect?

Storage losses vary with climate, bale type and density, initial moisture, and the specific storage setup. The following figures are source-reported estimates, not guaranteed outcomes for every farm or region.

The Illinois figures compare specific round-bale arrangements and should not be read as a universal ranking across hay types, locations, or weather conditions. Why moisture monitoring matters for fire safety

Hay baled too wet can heat as bacteria grow. Farm and Ranch eXtension in Safety and Health (FReSH) identifies baling at 20% moisture or less as the best way to reduce fire risk. Illinois Extension also warns that bales over 20% moisture may heat and combust. These are source recommendations, not a guarantee that hay below that figure cannot heat.

FReSH reports that most moisture-related hay fires occur within six weeks after baling and recommends checking a suspect stack internally twice daily during that period. Illinois Extension describes monitoring for up to 30 days and says temperatures usually peak 7–10 days after baling. Because the sources give different monitoring windows, consult your local extension service or fire officials for advice suited to the hay and storage conditions.

FReSH’s temperature guidance is for recognizing a serious hazard, not a do-it-yourself emergency procedure. Its table describes 150°F as the danger zone; at 160°F it calls for checks every couple of hours; at 175°F it warns of likely hot spots or fire pockets, advises alerting fire services, and says to stop air movement; at 190°F or higher it calls for fire-service assistance to remove hot hay. The source specifically warns that ventilation at 175°F could feed a fire. Probing or moving a dangerously hot stack can expose people to flare-ups, burned-out cavities, and toxic gas. Read the complete FReSH hay and straw fire guidance and follow local fire-service direction; do not approach or disturb a dangerous stack based solely on an online temperature table.

Winter hay storage checklist

  • Use a weather-tight, ventilated indoor structure when available.
  • Keep bales off damp floors and ground; make sure the site drains away from the stack.
  • For outdoor storage, cover the stack and direct runoff away from lower bales.
  • Leave space for air circulation, keeping bale spacing and access safe for the site and equipment.
  • Assess moisture before storage and treat suspected heating as a fire-safety concern.

The University of Minnesota Extension’s hay storage infographic also recommends stacking hay on pallets to limit ground-moisture absorption and covering bales to reduce losses.
