To keep your air conditioner running reliably through summer, check its filter monthly, replace it when dirty, clear debris around accessible outdoor equipment, and book a professional cooling-system check-up in spring. Routine care can support efficient operation and help catch problems; it does not guarantee a set reduction in your energy bill.
What you can do yourself each month
Check and replace the air filter
ENERGY STAR advises checking the filter every month, especially during heavy-use seasons, replacing it if it looks dirty, and changing it at least every three months. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes the system work harder, and can contribute to equipment damage or early failure. See ENERGY STAR’s heating and cooling guidance.
- Turn the system off before accessing the filter, following your equipment instructions.
- Find the filter and read its printed dimensions and any system-specific replacement instructions.
- Choose a replacement with the specified dimensions and type; there is no single size or filtration rating that suits every system.
- Install it in the direction indicated on the filter or equipment, then note the date so you can check it again next month.
Keep the outdoor area clear
Routinely check accessible outdoor equipment and clear away leaves and other debris without bending fins or opening equipment panels. The U.S. Department of Energy also recommends professional inspection of coils, fins, evaporative coolers, and heat pumps in its summer energy-saving guidance.
Why filter care can affect energy use
The DOE’s HomeCooling101 infographic says routinely replacing or cleaning air filters can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5–15 percent. That is an agency-reported general estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual home, and it is not a savings estimate for an annual tune-up. The indexed page does not state a publication year. ENERGY STAR separately says airflow problems can reduce system efficiency by up to 15 percent; that figure describes the potential effect of airflow problems, not a promised improvement from a service visit. - Electrical connections and motor measurements.
- Lubrication of moving parts where needed.

- Evaporator and condenser coils.

How to judge whether maintenance is saving you money
Official guidance supports the case for maintenance as a way to help equipment operate efficiently and address issues that could affect comfort or cause damage. It does not establish a universal dollar saving from an annual tune-up. Your bill depends on factors such as utility rates, equipment condition, climate, and how much cooling you use. If you want to assess a change, compare actual energy bills across comparable periods and account for weather and usage rather than treating a general estimate as a promise. The DOE’s July 1, 2021 summer guidance warns that neglect can lead to poor performance and excessive energy use, but gives no maintenance-specific bill-savings figure.
