Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo prep a new block plane, read the manual for its exact model, inspect the sole before considering any correction, hone the blade, then reassemble and tune it with a test cut on scrap. A new plane does not automatically need its sole flattened; correct only a small, demonstrated defect, and return one that is substantially out of flat.
1. Identify the plane and read its manual
Find the manufacturer and model number before removing the blade or changing an adjustment. Block planes differ in how their irons, depth controls, and mouths are adjusted. For example, Spear & Jackson’s instructions cover blade removal, honing, reassembly, depth adjustment, and throat adjustment for the CBP65 and CBP95 models; those directions should not be assumed to fit other planes. See the Spear & Jackson instructions for CBP65 and CBP95.
Keep small screws and levers together while working. If the plane arrives with visible packaging residue or a protective coating, clean it off gently without scraping or damaging finished surfaces. A coating is something to check for, not something every new plane necessarily has; see Common Woodworking’s general guide to setting up and sharpening a plane.
2. Inspect the sole before flattening anything
Check the plane body and sole for damage. If you want to assess flatness, assemble the plane with the blade and cap iron installed, retract the blade, and apply normal lever-cap pressure. Put a straightedge along the sole through the center, along both sides, and across the diagonals. This checks the plane in a condition closer to how it will be used; Fine Woodworking describes this approach in its step-by-step block-plane tuning guide.

Do not flatten the sole simply because the plane is new. If inspection shows a substantial flatness defect, contact the seller or manufacturer about a return rather than removing a large amount of material. For a minor defect, consider correction only if the maker’s guidance permits it.
For a minor sole defect only
Fine Woodworking describes using 320-grit pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) sandpaper on a known-flat reference surface, with the blade installed but retracted. The method is conditional: it is not a required setup step, and it is unsuitable if the reference surface is not truly flat or the plane is significantly out of flat.

3. Hone the blade according to the maker’s guidance
A new blade may benefit from honing before use. Wood Magazine’s guide to prepping a new block plane covers sharpening and setting the blade and recommends a honing guide with a Japanese waterstone or diamond stone. Choose a guide that fits your blade and follow the plane maker’s instructions for blade geometry. There is no single bevel angle established here as correct for every block plane.
Remove the iron as the manual directs, hone its cutting edge, and take care not to alter the blade or plane in ways the maker does not recommend. Refit the iron and cap iron in the specified orientation and order.

4. Set the blade for a fine test cut
Start with the blade retracted and advance it gradually. Align the cutting edge across the mouth so it projects evenly, then adjust depth and any movable mouth plate using the controls on your specific model. The objective is a fine, predictable cut—not a deep bite on the first pass.
- Set the plane on scrap wood and advance the blade slightly.
- Make a test pass. If it takes no shaving, advance the blade a little more.
- If the blade digs in or produces a shaving that is too heavy, retract it.
- Check lateral alignment if the shaving is uneven across its width, and adjust the mouth only as the manual allows.
- Repeat until the plane takes a controlled shaving and cuts cleanly.
Wood Magazine’s preparation guide and the Spear & Jackson manual both address setting the blade, but the adjustment hardware varies by model. If an adjustment mechanism feels stiff, consult the manual first. Common Woodworking mentions light machine oil as a general hand-plane option; use only a small amount if the manufacturer permits it.
