Yes, a reflective Mylar membrane can be pressure-formed into a concave solar reflector, but a household emergency blanket is not a proven parabolic mirror. In a typical design, a film is clamped around a rim and a pressure difference bows it inward. That produces a curved surface—not necessarily a mathematically accurate paraboloid or a well-focused mirror.
How pressure forms a reflective membrane
A pressure-formed mirror begins with reflective polymer film restrained around its perimeter by a rim or frame. A pressure difference across the film deflects it into a concave shape; solar-concentrator designs commonly create a slight vacuum beneath the membrane. The rim, membrane properties, and pressure conditions all affect the resulting shape.
Published solar-concentrator work establishes aluminized polyester, including Mylar, as a reflector material. Zanganeh and colleagues used a 50 μm-thick Mylar polyester mirror membrane in a prototype facet in a 2012 study. That is evidence for an engineered membrane design, not a test of a typical emergency blanket. Read the 2012 study.
Why a pressure-shaped mirror may not be parabolic
A paraboloid brings parallel incoming rays toward a common focus. But uniform pressure on a circular membrane generally does not produce an exact paraboloid. The resulting shape can introduce spherical aberration, spreading reflected light rather than bringing it neatly to one point.

A 2016 study examined elastic and elasto-plastic membrane behavior, comparing modeled performance with physical shape scans. Its findings make an important distinction: pressure can create a curved reflector, but the curve’s optical accuracy must be measured and assessed. Performance figures from optimized or idealized research dishes describe those specific designs and conditions; they cannot predict the focus or concentration of a blanket prototype. Read the 2016 study.
What the prototype literature establishes
A 2004 MIT mechanical-engineering thesis explored aluminized Mylar as a lightweight solar-concentrator reflector. Its abstract describes a rim prototype that worked as a mirror, while noting that improving the seal around the rim remained future work. This supports the feasibility of the material-and-rim concept, but does not establish the optical accuracy of an emergency blanket or provide a ready-made household design. Read the MIT thesis.

Single membrane or multi-facet dish?
Research includes both individual pressure-deformed membrane facets and dishes assembled from multiple facets. These are different levels of the same design problem: a facet must have a useful optical surface, and multiple facets must also be positioned and supported to work together.
| Design consideration | Single membrane facet | Multi-facet dish |
|---|---|---|
| Optical accuracy | Depends on the membrane shape and how it changes under pressure. | Depends on facet accuracy as well as how the facets are arranged. |
| Geometry | Rim angle and facet dimensions influence the surface. | Facet geometry must fit the larger dish structure. |
| Pressure and sealing | Requires controlled pressure difference and a perimeter seal. | Requires pressure control and sealing for the individual membrane facets. |
| Support | Needs a stable rim or frame. | Needs a structure to position and support multiple facets. |
| Surface measurement | The resulting membrane shape must be checked. | Both individual facet shapes and their placement matter. |
The cited work does not establish a consumer-ready winner for a blanket project. The choice depends on the required optical accuracy, support complexity, pressure control, sealing, and how the surface can be measured. The 2016 study discusses membrane performance and measurement; the 2012 study describes a prototype facet.

What a conceptual build would need
A demonstration concept would need more than reflective film and a curved frame. Relevant apparatus categories include a stiff, smooth support rim; a perimeter clamp and seal; a controlled pressure difference; and a means to measure the surface and the reflected-light footprint. A blanket should not be assumed to have the coating, flatness, or surface quality required for an optical mirror.
The cited studies do not provide a validated emergency-blanket recipe, consumer pump recommendation, or safe focal-target procedure. A solar concentrator can direct intense sunlight into a small area: never look toward the focus or handle a concentrated beam. Treat any prototype as an optical experiment, not as a proven solar-thermal device.
