Portland International Airport’s August 3, 2024, “dress rehearsal” was a public test of the expanded terminal before it opened on August 14—not an event devoted to walking on the airport’s famous carpet. Volunteers acted out travel scenarios so airport teams could work through passenger processes and movement in the new space. The classic carpet’s return was one recognizable detail in a much larger terminal project.
What the PDX dress rehearsal was
The Port of Portland invited members of the public to preview the new main terminal and take part in a rehearsal before its scheduled public opening. The airport’s FlyPDX employee-facing page listed Saturday, August 3, 2024, with start times of 1:00 or 1:30 p.m. It sought more than 2,000 participants from across the region and advertised a $50 gift card, refreshments, snacks, and prize drawings. These event details appeared in the airport page’s search excerpt; the page itself was not accessible when reported.
The purpose was practical: to put people through travel scenarios and see how the new terminal’s processes and passenger flows worked before opening day. A June 18, 2024, TravelWise report said volunteers were to simulate check-in, bag drop, security screening, and movement through the terminal during an exercise expected to last about two and a half hours. Those operational details are TravelWise’s reporting, rather than information confirmed in the airport excerpt.
How the rehearsal related to opening day
The rehearsal was scheduled for August 3, eleven days before the expanded terminal opened to the public on August 14, 2024. Condé Nast Traveler’s August 14 feature confirms the opening date and describes Portlanders volunteering earlier that month to follow traveler scripts. The exercise offered airport teams a chance to observe the terminal in use before regular passengers arrived; the available accounts do not publish a formal list of findings or measured performance results.

Why the classic carpet was part of the story
The carpet is a familiar piece of PDX identity, but it was not the purpose of the rehearsal and does not cover the entire new terminal. Condé Nast Traveler reports that the whimsical original pattern was replaced by a more subdued green design in 2015, then returned in selected areas of the expanded terminal.
In the new layout, the classic pattern appears in waiting areas. Higher-traffic routes instead use white oak and terrazzo, which the feature says are easier to navigate with wheelchairs, assistive devices, and roller bags. That distinction matters: the carpet’s return is a design choice for particular spaces, not a description of the terminal’s main circulation surfaces.

What is known about turnout and the terminal project
The airport’s event notice sought more than 2,000 volunteers, and Condé Nast Traveler later reported that thousands showed up. Neither account gives an exact verified attendance count. The sources also do not provide published test results, so turnout alone should not be treated as proof of a particular operational outcome.
Condé Nast Traveler characterized the redevelopment as a $2.15 billion project. That is the publication’s reported figure, not a verified final accounting from Port of Portland project materials.
