A dim-bulb tester puts an incandescent lamp in series with vintage mains-powered equipment to limit current during cautious initial power-up. A bright lamp can warn that the equipment is drawing substantial current, but it cannot identify the fault, isolate the chassis, or make live electrical work safe.
What a dim-bulb tester does
The tester places an incandescent bulb between the mains supply and the device under test. As current heats the filament, its resistance rises. If the equipment draws a lot of current, the bulb may glow brightly and the voltage reaching the equipment will fall; a lighter load may leave it dim or nearly dark. As Pieter-Tjerk de Boer (PA3FWM) puts it, “Effectively, the light bulb acts as a current limiter.” His technical note adapts part of an article originally published in the Dutch amateur radio magazine Electron in February 2022.
Brightness is only a rough clue. It varies with the equipment, bulb wattage, and operating state. A bright bulb does not reveal which component is bad, and a dim bulb is not proof that the equipment is safe or working correctly.
When it belongs in a repair workflow
A series lamp can reduce current during a fault while a repaired or long-stored device is first energized. It is a risk-reduction measure, not a substitute for inspecting and repairing the equipment before applying power. Old capacitors and deteriorated insulation can make vintage equipment hazardous; IEEE Spectrum’s restoration account cautions against casually plugging in tube-era equipment without inspection.

- Efficient Plug In Operation: Streamline your diagnostic workflow with the straightforward plug in socket design. Users simply insert the bulb or light source into the correct receptacle and activate the switch to commence evaluation. This streamlined approach reduces the complexity of electrical diagnostics, enabling electricians and home improvement enthusiasts to swiftly verify whether a lighting component is functioning within expected parameters.
- Practical For Workshop Use: Ideal for electricians, lighting showroom staff, and DIY homeowners, this meter serves as a convenient bench tool for verifying lighting components before installation. With a load current capacity of 3A, the unit offers practical assistance in isolating faults in LED panel lights and fixtures, helping to confirm functionality and avoid unnecessary component replacement during routine repair and assembly tasks.
Use a limiter only as part of competent mains-electronics work, with knowledge of the circuit and safe handling practices. The available descriptions do not establish a universal build recipe suitable for every location, tester, or user.
Current limiting is not isolation
A dim-bulb tester does not provide galvanic isolation. That distinction is especially important with transformerless equipment that may have a “hot chassis,” and when taking measurements on powered circuits. An isolation transformer is a separate device used for appropriate bench work; it is not built into a series-lamp limiter. IEEE Spectrum describes using a separate isolation transformer, and Retro Radio Shop’s instructions also state that its tester does not isolate the equipment.

Neither a limiter nor an isolation transformer makes it safe to touch exposed live circuitry. Do not treat a glowing bulb, a dark bulb, or the addition of a tester as permission to handle a powered chassis.
Choosing a bulb
For the conventional series-lamp design, use an incandescent bulb, not an LED or CFL. The bulb’s base and mains rating must match the tester, and its wattage affects how much current the tester allows. Choose wattage in light of the specific equipment’s expected draw and operating state; there is no one correct size for every radio, amplifier, or mains system.

OTVARC’s guide says bulb size depends on the radio and its expected power consumption. Retro Radio Shop offers examples for different device classes, but they are vendor guidance rather than a universal specification. A bulb selected for one set may not give useful behavior with another.
Simple limiter or feature-rich bench unit?
A basic tester is a series lamp and its associated mains wiring. More elaborate bench units may add meters or a variable transformer to improve observation or adjustment. Those additions increase complexity; the cited IEEE account does not establish that they are necessary for every repair. A variable transformer (often called a Variac) is not an isolation transformer, so do not mistake adjustability for isolation.

A commercial tester is another option, but check the exact model’s rating and instructions against your equipment and local mains supply. ATO Audio’s listing described a 120 V AC tester with a standard E26 socket and a recommendation for a 100 W incandescent bulb; the listing was shown as sold out when checked. Those are vendor-provided details, not independent test results, and availability may change. Check the listing for current product information.
