Its swollen base stores water, so it handles dry conditions better than persistently wet soil. Despite its name, it is not a true palm.
What is a ponytail palm?
Beaucarnea recurvata belongs to the asparagus family, Asparagaceae. Its distinctive swollen trunk base, called a caudex, stores water; long, narrow leaves grow from the top. That water-storing structure helps explain why the plant prefers infrequent watering. The common name is misleading: it is not a true palm. North Carolina State University Extension and the Missouri Botanical Garden describe the plant and its growth.
Where should you put it?
Indoors, choose the brightest practical location, such as a sunny window or a bright east- or west-facing window. Iowa State University Extension recommends bright light and identifies east- or west-facing windows as suitable; the Missouri Botanical Garden recommends a sunny window. Iowa State University Extension: Ponytail Palm.
Established plants can grow outdoors in full sun to partial shade in appropriate warm climates. If you move a houseplant outside, increase its exposure gradually rather than placing it straight into stronger sun or a new temperature range. This helps limit stress from the change. UF/IFAS Extension: Ponytail Palm.

How often should you water a ponytail palm?
Do not follow a fixed calendar. Watering frequency depends on how quickly the mix dries, which is affected by light, temperature, soil and pot. Let the soil dry between waterings, then water deeply and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering substantially in winter, when growth and drying may slow. Wisconsin Extension recommends deep, infrequent watering and a significant winter reduction.
The main risk is keeping the roots wet for too long. Use a pot with drainage holes and do not leave the plant standing in water. Wet, poorly drained soil can cause root rot, which can kill the plant, according to UF/IFAS Extension.
What soil and pot does it need?
Use a free-draining medium; cactus-type potting mix is a straightforward choice. Wisconsin Extension suggests a cactus-style mix or improving regular potting mix with sharp sand or small gravel. Choose a container with excellent drainage. A relatively small pot can suit this slow-growing houseplant, so there is no need to move it into a much larger container automatically. The Missouri Botanical Garden also notes that houseplants do well in relatively small pots with excellent drainage.

When should you repot?
Repot when the plant needs more room or its current container is no longer suitable, rather than on an annual schedule. Ponytail palms grow slowly in containers and may remain in the same pot for many years. A larger pot gives the plant more room to increase in height and girth; keeping it in a smaller pot can help limit its size. Wisconsin Extension.

Keep feeding light and seasonal. Iowa State University Extension recommends dilute fertilizer once or twice a month in spring and summer, while Wisconsin Extension recommends feeding once or twice during the growing season. These are modest seasonal schedules, not a reason to fertilize heavily or year-round. Iowa State University Extension; Wisconsin Extension.
You can trim dry brown leaf tips, but brown tips alone do not identify the cause. Wisconsin Extension lists too much or too little water, excessive fertilizer and accumulated salts as possible causes. If the problem persists, review care conditions rather than assuming the plant needs more water.

Which pests and problems should you watch for?
Spider mites, mealybugs and scale are among the pests reported on ponytail palms grown as houseplants. Inspect leaves and stems if the plant appears unhealthy. The Missouri Botanical Garden lists all three; Wisconsin Extension also notes mealybugs and scale.
Can you grow it outdoors or from seed?
In warm climates, ponytail palms can be grown outdoors; in cooler regions, they are commonly kept indoors or grown in containers that can be moved. The Missouri Botanical Garden gives USDA hardiness zone 10 as outdoor context and advises moving container plants outside only after the last spring frost, with gradual adjustment. Conditions vary by climate, so do not treat that zone guidance as a guarantee for every site. Missouri Botanical Garden.
The extension sources describe propagation by seed, not pups. Seed may be difficult to find: UF/IFAS says it usually must be imported from Mexico, and Wisconsin Extension notes that it is not commonly available. Wisconsin recommends spring sowing and a minimum temperature of 68°F. UF/IFAS Extension; Wisconsin Extension.
