Canal-side excavation and nearby flyover work were underway, and residents alleged that digging or vibration contributed. But contemporaneous reports also attributed a different initial explanation to Public Works Department (PWD) officials: a weak basement. The available reporting does not establish a final cause.
What happened in Aattupatti
Video of the house falling circulated in reports published the day after the collapse. The PTI dispatch reproduced by The Week said the house was vacant when it fell. Scroll reported that a housewarming was planned for February, while PTI said the ceremony was planned for that month as well. Scroll’s video report described the collapse as occurring days before the planned event.
The locality is spelled Aattupatti in some reports and Attupatti in others; coverage also uses Ambedkar Nagar. The house stood beside a drainage canal. PTI reported that flyover-pillar work was taking place nearby and workers were digging along the canal’s side. Onmanorama described excavation by an earthmover and reported that residents felt heavy vibrations.
What was said about the cause
Residents’ account
Residents alleged that excavation or vibration from work beside the canal contributed to the collapse. The New Indian Express quoted P. Suresh, identified as the owner’s son-in-law, as saying workers dug behind the house without informing the family despite requests. That is an attributed allegation, not a verified account of the engineering cause.

Reported PWD assessment
The New Indian Express reported that PWD officials described a weak basement as the primary cause. That was an initial explanation reported at the time, not a published final engineering finding. The available reports provide no measured vibration data, foundation dimensions, soil assessment, or structural investigation with which to independently determine how the house failed.
The video shows the building collapsing; it cannot by itself establish whether nearby work caused the failure, whether the basement was inadequate, or whether more than one factor was involved. Without a documented inquiry finding, drainage work should not be stated as the conclusively established cause.

What was reported about the owner and the loss
Coverage differs on the owner’s identity: The New Indian Express names R. Savitri, while Onmanorama identifies a Shekhar-Chitra couple. The reports do not resolve that discrepancy, so neither identification should be treated as definitive without attribution.
The New Indian Express reported Savitri’s account that the house cost Rs 65 lakh, funded through savings, loans, and mortgages on jewellery. This is the family’s reported spending, not an independently verified valuation.

Inquiry and compensation: what is known
PTI reported that PWD Minister K. Lakshminarayanan visited and assured the owner that an inquiry would be held and necessary steps taken to offer solatium. The New Indian Express also reported a protest demanding compensation. The contemporaneous sources cited here do not provide final inquiry findings or confirm that compensation was paid.
