The Allegheny County Airport Authority said cracks reported in Pittsburgh International Airport’s new parking garage were cosmetic and that its analysis found no effect on structural integrity. Public reporting documents the concern and the authority’s response, but does not include the underlying engineering analysis or an independent inspection report. The available public evidence therefore does not independently settle whether the cracks posed a structural risk.
What was reported about the garage cracks
On October 22, 2024, CBS Pittsburgh reported that Allegheny County Council President Patrick Catena said whistleblowers had sent him photographs and video showing cracks in floors of the new airport parking garage. Catena raised concerns about construction quality. The report described the visible issue as hairline cracks that appeared while crews prepared part of the garage for a finishing coating. CBS Pittsburgh’s report relayed both the allegation and the authority’s response.
What the airport authority said—and what the public record establishes
The Allegheny County Airport Authority said it had identified solutions and characterized the cracks as cosmetic. Its statement, quoted by CBS Pittsburgh, said: “These cracks are cosmetic, and our analysis shows no impact on the structural integrity of the building.” The report attributes that statement to the authority; it does not name an individual engineer as its speaker.
That is the airport authority’s position, not an independently verified engineering conclusion. The publicly available material cited in the report does not provide the underlying analysis, identify an independent reviewer, or include an independent inspection report resolving the structural question. The reported images and video prompted concern, but by themselves do not establish the cause or structural significance of the cracks.

What the later airport project milestones do—and do not—show
Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development said the new PIT terminal opened in November 2025. Its project description said modernization added 6,000 parking spaces, including a parking structure with more than 3,200 covered spaces. These are broader project figures; they do not specify how many spaces were in the garage when cracks were reported or provide technical evidence about those cracks. The department’s opening announcement records the project milestone, not a finding on the garage’s structural condition.
The airport authority describes the wider transformation, including a new terminal and parking complex, as completed in 2025. Completion and opening establish project milestones, but do not, on their own, validate the authority’s earlier technical claim. The authority’s project overview provides that broader context.

Where to check current parking information
The 2024 cracking report does not establish whether a particular parking area is open or closed now. For current options, rates, and any closure notices, check the airport’s official parking page before traveling; its availability information and prices can change.
