Pick blueberries when they are fully blue, taste sweet, and come away easily—not simply when they first turn blue. Because berries ripen in waves, harvest selectively and return to the bush regularly. Handle fruit gently, keep it dry and cool, and wash it just before eating.
How to tell when blueberries are ready to pick
Blue color alone is not a reliable ripeness test: a berry can turn blue before its flavor is fully developed. Look for an evenly blue berry with no red tinge, especially at the stem end. Taste a sample, too. Ripe berries should taste good and separate readily from the plant; if a berry resists, leave it attached for a later pass. Size by itself does not indicate maturity.
There is no single waiting period that applies to every garden. The Government of Ontario’s small-scale growing guide says berries may benefit from staying on the bush for three to seven days after turning completely blue. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension gives a general interval of one to three days after turning blue. These are regional guidelines, not competing universal rules: use flavor and easy separation as your practical checks, and account for local growing conditions.
Why you should make several picking passes
Blueberries in the same cluster do not ripen together. The Government of Ontario says clusters can ripen over four to six weeks, while the University of New Hampshire Extension describes ripening as a progression. The season varies with cultivar, weather, and location, so a calendar date cannot reliably tell every grower when to begin.

Pick only berries that meet the ripeness cues, leaving green or reddish fruit on the bush. Check plants regularly while fruit is ripening and return for the next crop of ready berries rather than stripping a whole cluster at once.
How to pick berries without bruising them
- Choose a suitable time. Pick after dew has dried, preferably during a cooler part of the day. Avoid harvesting wet fruit. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension notes that wet or rainy harvesting can contribute to splitting and poorer storage quality.
- Handle each berry gently. Roll or ease a ripe berry away from the cluster between your fingers; do not squeeze it. Leave any berry that does not detach easily for another visit.
- Keep the harvest out of sun and avoid compressing it. Use a firm container and do not overfill it. A belt-mounted berry-picking basket can free both hands, as the Ontario guide suggests, but an ordinary container works perfectly well.
- Move fruit to a cool place promptly. Minimize handling, keep picked berries in the shade, and refrigerate them soon after harvesting.
How to store and wash your harvest
Keep blueberries dry in the refrigerator in a firm container, with the fruit shallow enough to avoid crushing berries at the bottom. Do not wash them before storage; wash shortly before eating or using them. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives a maximum refrigerated storage life of seven to ten days, updated on December 22, 2021. Actual keeping time depends on the condition of the berries and how they have been handled.

Freezing blueberries
For longer storage, the University of Minnesota Extension advises washing and drying berries, spreading them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transferring the frozen fruit to an airtight container or freezer bag.
Picking at a u-pick farm
Call the farm before traveling to check whether picking is currently available. Ripening varies by location, variety, and weather, and a farm’s picking status can change as ripe fruit is picked.

Protecting fruit before harvest
If birds are taking berries from your bushes, bird netting supported above the plants may help protect ripening fruit; the University of New Hampshire Extension describes this approach. It is an option for gardens with a bird problem, not a requirement for every blueberry bush.
