Deluxe 20 head. The choice is between a focused slide system and a two-method kit—not between independently proven snow-removal performance levels. Available specifications and manual instructions describe the products, but do not establish comparative removal rates or results from controlled testing.
What the AVA500 and AVA1000 include
MARSHALLTOWN’s product literature describes the Avalanche 1000 as a kit containing the Avalanche 500 slide system and the SnowRake! Deluxe 20 rake head. The AVA500 manual’s parts list likewise identifies the slide components as AVA500 parts and the SnowRake head and universal adapter as AVA1000-only parts.
| Model or component | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| AVA500 | Wheeled cutter frames and a plastic slide, with fiberglass poles, couplers, a handle frame adapter, and end grip identified in the manual’s parts list. |
| AVA1000 | Combination package containing the AVA500 slide system plus the SnowRake! Deluxe 20 head and universal adapter, according to MARSHALLTOWN literature and the AVA500 manual. |
That difference matters when selecting a method: the slide is designed to travel beneath snow as the cutter frame is rolled up the roof, while the separate rake head provides a rake-based approach. The reviewed specifications do not establish that one package clears snow faster or more effectively than the other.

| Part | Published measurement |
|---|---|
| Plastic slide | 17 inches (432 mm) wide by 12 feet (366 cm) long |
| Slide cutter-frame wheels | 1½ inches (38 mm) |
| SnowRake! Deluxe 20 head | 24 inches (607 mm) wide |
| Combination kit handle reach | Approximately 16 feet (488 cm) at full extension |
The approximately 16-foot figure is the stated full extension for the combination kit; it is not a guarantee that a user can reach every roof area from every ground position. Roof height, slope, obstacles, and where the user can safely stand affect practical access. The manual’s parts list identifies four-foot fiberglass poles, but the source does not give a separate reach specification for the AVA500 alone.
How the slide system is meant to work
- Position the cutter frame at the lower roof edge with the plastic slide hanging down.
- Slowly roll the cutter frame up the roof so the slide follows underneath the snow.
- If resistance occurs, stop and adjust rather than forcing the tool. The manual’s instruction is: “If resistance occurs, STOP and adjust.”
- Repeat along the roof edge as needed.
These are the manufacturer’s operating directions, not independent performance findings. The manual also gives the direct warning: “Keep away from electrical wires.” Check the work area for overhead lines before handling extended poles or moving the tool.

Roof surfaces and slope suitability
MARSHALLTOWN product literature lists the SnowRake head for shingles, architectural asphalt, shake, tile, metal, and solar-panel roofs. This is the maker’s stated compatibility list; it does not establish suitability for every roof condition, installation, or method of use. In particular, a list of surfaces should not be treated as a guarantee against damage.
Slope guidance is less definite. A Home Depot answer to a question about flat or low-slope roofs says the tool needs an incline for snow to be removed effectively. A Canadian dealer says the products work on roofs at 3/12 pitch or steeper. Those are retailer and dealer statements; the reviewed official manual does not specify a model-specific minimum pitch. If your roof is low-slope or nearly flat, confirm suitability for the exact model and roof setup with the manufacturer or seller before purchasing.

What the tools do not do: remove ice dams
The manual states: “THIS PRODUCT DOES NOT REMOVE ICE DAMS.” It also says keeping five feet of roof edge clear will typically prevent ice dams. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that clearing snow will prevent an ice dam in every building or weather condition.
For an existing ice dam, a Canadian dealer advises clearing snow behind the dam and not pulling at the dam with the rake. Do not use this tool as an ice-removal device; seek qualified local advice about an existing dam and the appropriate approach for your roof.

Parts, wear, and warranty
The manual says the plastic slide wears in normal use and is intended as a disposable replacement part; it is not covered by the manual’s warranty. The manual version retrieved, © 2018, states a limited six-month warranty for the original purchaser when the product is used normally and assembled and operated according to factory recommendations. It excludes damage or wear from misuse, abrasion, corrosion, negligence, accident, faulty assembly, or tampering.
Because those terms come from a 2018 manual, they may not match current seller or manufacturer terms. Check the warranty and replacement-part availability that apply to the specific product and purchase date before ordering.

Which package is the better fit?
- Consider the AVA500 if you want the wheeled slide system and do not need the additional rake head.
- Consider the AVA1000 if you want both the slide system and the SnowRake! Deluxe 20 head in one package.
- Confirm fit before choosing either if your roof is flat or low-slope, has a surface or installation that raises damage concerns, or cannot be reached safely from your intended working position.
- Do not choose either as an ice-dam tool. The manufacturer expressly says the product does not remove ice dams.
There is no substantiated independent comparison of snow-removal speed, capacity, or outcomes for these models in the available product and retailer descriptions. Current price, included parts, and warranty should be checked on the live listing because they can vary and the manual’s terms are dated.
