Ondol: How Traditional Korean Underfloor Heating Works—and How It Changed

Traditional ondol carried fire heat beneath stone floors; modern Korean homes commonly use hot-water pipes under the floor. Here is how the systems differ and what the tradition means.

Ondol is Korea’s traditional underfloor heating system: a fire warmed gases that travelled through passages beneath stone floor slabs, heating the floor before the smoke escaped. The floor stored that heat and released it into the room. Modern Korean homes commonly retain the floor-centered warmth but use hot water circulating through pipes beneath the floor instead of a fire and smoke flues.

How traditional ondol heated a room

A traditional ondol began at a firebox. Hot gases from combustion moved horizontally through channels beneath stone slabs, then exhausted outside. The route under the occupied floor let the stones absorb and store heat; they gradually released it upward into the room. This differs from a fireplace that sends smoke directly up a chimney without first routing it beneath the floor.

The Korea Heritage Service estimates that ondol culture has continued for more than 2,000 years, drawing on early heating remains found across the Korean peninsula. That is an estimate of cultural continuity, not a precise date for the invention of ondol. Korea Heritage Service, 2025.

Why ondol shaped daily life

Ondol made the floor the room’s main source of warmth, shaping how people used domestic space. In a traditional heated room, the area nearer the firebox was the warmer “아랫목” (araetmok), while the farther, cooler area was the “윗목” (wimok). These names reflect the uneven temperatures created by the heat’s path beneath the floor.

How modern Korean floor heating works

Modern Korean apartments commonly use hydronic radiant floor heating: heated water circulates through pipes installed beneath the floor, transferring warmth to the floor surface and then into the room. This is related to traditional ondol in its use of a heated floor, but the heat source and delivery system are different. It does not rely on combustion gases travelling through underfloor flues.

VEVOR Floor Heating Mat, 20 Sq. ft, Electric Radiant in-Floor Heated Warm System with Digital Floor Sensing Thermostat, Includes Installation Monitor, Adhesive Back for Easy Installation on The Floor
  • Comfortable and Uniform Heating: The 20 Square Feet floor heating cable kit includes the heating mat, thermostat, alarm, and floor temperature sensor. The heating mat elevates the temperature from the bottom up, bidding farewell to the stuffiness and dryness of ordinary heaters. Cable Size: 1.6 x 13.1 ft / 50.0 x 398.4 cm
  • Easy to Install: The 2" spacing allows for cutting, rotating, and flipping. The heating mat is 1/8 inch thick with double-sided adhesive, adhering to the subfloor and remaining flat even when converted. DO NOT CUT THE CABLE. The heating wires must be embedded in a self-leveling underlayment, thin-set mortar, or cement.
  • Programmable Thermostat: The touchscreen thermostat is easy to use. The thermostat has a built-in GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) for protection. Features include dual sensing (air/floor), power logging, and child lock. It offers four temperature control modes, including a 7-day scheduling feature that eliminates repetition.
  • Timely Cable Inspection: The installation monitor in the kit eliminates the need for additional purchases. Ensuring the proper functioning of the underfloor heating cable, avoiding the need to move and re-pour concrete under the floor. When selecting the size, round up your floor space. For example, a floor of 2.6 square meters requires a 2 square meter mat to avoid excess coverage.
  • Comprehensive Installation Guide: The radiant floor heating system provides a detailed installation and usage guide in the instruction manual. It helps you choose the correct size and provides guidance for installation and usage. The heating mat can be installed beneath ceramic tiles, natural stone, laminate, or wooden flooring.

A peer-reviewed review describes the transition from furnace-heated traditional systems to modern hydronic systems. The modern arrangement also changes what must be built into the floor and how heat is controlled: pipes and water circulation replace the traditional firebox, gas passages and heat-storing stone construction. Energy and Buildings, 2003.

Traditional ondol and modern hydronic heating compared

Feature Traditional ondol Modern Korean hydronic floor heating
Heat source and delivery Combustion warmed gases that travelled through underfloor passages. Hot water circulates through pipes beneath the floor.
Floor construction Stone slabs above passages stored and released heat. Heating pipes are integrated beneath the floor; construction details vary by system.
Controls and response The heated floor stored heat and released it gradually; specific controls are not stated in the cited sources. System controls and response depend on the design; specific control arrangements are not stated in the cited sources.
Building context Traditional Korean housing with a firebox and flues beneath the floor. Commonly used in modern Korean apartments.

Efficiency depends on the whole building

There is no universal efficiency winner established by the available comparison. Energy use depends on system design and the building envelope, including how much heat the home loses. A 2003 review found less heat loss in the modern apartments it compared, which had tighter envelopes, but reported higher energy consumption than for the traditional ondol housing in that historical comparison. Those findings apply to the study’s particular housing comparison; they do not show that traditional ondol always uses less energy or that one system is inherently more efficient in every building.

What Korean rules say about ondol installation

In the Republic of Korea, Article 12 of the building-facilities rule effective 2026-08-24 addresses ondol installation standards. A translated rendering of its requirement says: “When ondol is installed in a building pursuant to Article 87(2) of the Enforcement Decree, it shall conform to the standards in attached Table 1-7 in order to efficiently manage thermal energy in its structure and prevent the risk of fire.” This is a translation of the Korean text, not an official English translation. The rule also provides for installation confirmation after construction, subject to stated exceptions. It is Korean building regulation, not a universal code for other countries. Designing modern hot-water ondol panels

For dry hot-water ondol panels, a Korean standard described by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy uses variables including hot-water temperature, indoor temperature, panel-material thermal conductivity and pipe spacing to calculate heat output. Its test method measures surface and internal temperatures and heat flow. These factors help characterize a panel’s heat delivery; they are not a universal efficiency score or instructions for installing a system. Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, 2016-12-09.
