To divide a circle into eight equal sectors without calculating angles, first draw two perpendicular diameters to make four quarters, then bisect each quarter with compass arcs and a straightedge. This is a compass-and-ruler method—not a compass-free one—and it works whether you need full radial layout lines or only marks around the edge.
Tools and setup
You need a drawing compass, a ruler or straightedge, a pencil, and a circle with its center identified. The compass-and-ruler approach is described in WOOD Magazine’s “No-Math Geometry – Dividing a Circle into Eighths,” updated July 8, 2025; the same divide-into-four, then bisect-the-quadrants logic appears in Nick Doe’s “Divvying up the pie” construction handout.
“No-math” means you do not need to calculate angle measurements. It does not mean you can work without tools. Use a stable surface and make the center and pencil marks clearly enough to follow as you construct the lines.
Divide the circle into eight sectors
- Mark the center and draw the first diameter. Draw a straight line through the center so it meets the circle at two opposite points. This makes two equal semicircles.
- Construct the perpendicular diameter. Open the compass wider than the distance from the center to the circle. Put its point at one end of the first diameter and draw arcs on both sides of the line. Without changing the compass setting, repeat from the other end. Mark the two places where the arcs cross.
- Draw the second diameter. Use the straightedge to connect the two arc intersections, passing through the circle’s center. The two diameters divide the circle into four quarters.
- Bisect each quarter with compass arcs. For each pair of adjacent diameter endpoints, place the compass point at one endpoint and draw an arc inside the relevant quarter. Repeat from the other endpoint using the same compass setting. The arcs intersect inside that quarter. Work around the circle to find the corresponding intersection in each quarter.
- Draw the four bisecting lines. For each arc intersection, draw a line from the circle’s center through that point to the opposite side of the circle. The opposite points define each full line through the center. These four new lines, together with the original diameters, divide the circle into eight equal sectors.
If you only need layout marks on the circumference, mark where the eight lines meet the edge instead of drawing each full line. Erase temporary arcs and construction marks when the layout is complete.

Why the construction makes equal eighths
A diameter divides a circle into two equal halves. A second diameter perpendicular to the first divides those halves into four equal quarters. Bisecting each quarter creates eight congruent central sectors. In the compass construction, equal-radius arcs from the relevant endpoints create symmetric intersections; a line through the center and that intersection gives the bisector. The underlying perpendicular-bisector construction is also explained in the geometric construction handout.
The result is eight equal sectors radiating from the center, not simply eight approximately evenly spaced perimeter marks. The sources describe the construction but provide no measured tolerance or accuracy figure. For a physical workpiece, the practical result depends on how accurately the circle and center are marked, how consistently the compass is set, and how carefully the straightedge is aligned.

When folding or a classroom template makes more sense
Folding can be useful when the goal is to teach or understand repeated halving, rather than to transfer a drawn layout. The University of California, Berkeley geometry text discusses repeatedly folding a segment in half to produce halves, fourths, and eighths. YouCubed’s “Finding Pi” activity references folding a circle into eighths. These are educational approaches; they are not the same step-by-step compass construction described above.
For a classroom poster-board template, PBS NOVA Teachers’ “MARS Dead or Alive” materials specify a 36-cm-diameter circle and list poster board, scissors, a meter stick, pencil, and compass. The 36-cm size belongs to that activity, not to the general circle-dividing method.
