East River Residence, designed by Omar Gandhi Architects on Nova Scotia’s rocky Atlantic coast, is described as spanning a valley between rocky embankments on slender columns. The elevated design lets the terrain continue beneath the house while its changing gable roof and broad openings connect rooms to the surrounding landscape.
How the house sits above the valley
New Atlas describes the residence as set amid dense forest in a rocky coastal area, with the house stretching between embankments like a bridge. Rather than following the valley floor, the home is raised on slender columns, leaving the land beneath it visually and physically open. Yanko Design also reports that the house stands above the terrain on steel legs.
The publications describe a couple from Montreal as seeking a quieter life closer to nature. That account comes from New Atlas; the available reports do not include direct client testimony or project documentation.
Why the roof changes height
The gable roof shifts with the site and the spaces below it. New Atlas reports that it sits lower over the living areas, where the lower ceiling is associated with a more intimate feel and natural light, then rises over a yoga studio to open views toward the ocean. The roof is therefore presented not only as an exterior form but also as a way to give different rooms distinct relationships to light and landscape.
