Start by identifying the generator’s complete model and spec number—including its spec letter—on the dataplate. “Onan 5500” covers multiple gasoline and LP configurations, and the troubleshooting steps and manuals are not interchangeable. Then use the applicable operator manual to read the status light, try its operator-level checks, and determine whether the fault calls for authorized service.
Find the manual for your exact Onan 5500
Read the complete model/spec number and spec letter from the generator dataplate before applying a procedure or ordering a part. Cummins explains that the spec letter is part of the serial-tag identification. Its RV generator manual index lists QG 5500 EFI/7000 EFI in series HGJAA and QG 5500, 5500 EVAP, 5500 LP, 7000 and related variants in series HGJAB. Manual numbers differ by series and spec range.
For the HGJAA A–E and HGJAB A–E ranges shown in the index, Cummins lists operator manual 983-0101, installation manual 983-0600 and service manual 981-0201. Other spec-letter ranges may have different operator and installation manuals. Confirm the listing for your complete identification before relying on a document.
The troubleshooting guidance below draws on Cummins operator manual 983-0101, Issue 6, dated October 2014. Its scope is not every generator sold as an Onan 5500. Check Cummins’ current manual index for your unit’s applicable documents.

Read the status light and retrieve the fault code
After shutdown, the control’s status indicator can blink a fault pattern. In manual 983-0101, the pattern means:

| Three blinks | Service fault; this is a first-level code, not code 33. | Press Stop once to display the two-digit second-level fault code. |
| Four blinks | Cranking exceeded 30 seconds without the engine starting; this is a first-level code, not code 44. | Follow the applicable overcrank checks below. |
| Rapid flashing | Engine Run Only mode; AC output is disabled. | The manual attributes this mode to a faulty generator and directs the owner to an authorized Onan dealer. |
For a three-blink service fault, the first group of blinks in the second-level display is the tens digit and the second group is the units digit. Press Stop again to stop the display. The manual identifies 33 and 44 as unassigned, so do not mistake the three- or four-blink first-level patterns for those second-level codes.
The last logged fault may continue to blink after the initiating condition has been corrected. The manual says fault blinking stops after five minutes, or after 15 minutes on Series HGJAA; pressing Stop three times within five seconds restores it. Confirm these display details in the manual for your exact controller and model variant.

Make the basic checks before troubleshooting further
Cummins’ operator manual identifies oil level, clean and tight battery connections, fuel level and avoiding overload as routine checks that can prevent many shutdowns. If the generator and vehicle engine draw from a shared tank, the generator pickup is usually positioned so the generator runs out of fuel first.

- Check the fuel gauge and confirm that the connected electrical load is not excessive.
- Use the corrective action for the displayed code in the manual that matches your generator; these checks do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.
Use the manual’s operator-level corrective actions
Two blinks: low oil pressure (code 2)
Check the oil level and add oil if needed. If the oil is above the dipstick’s Full mark, drain the excess. Do not assume that adding oil is the answer when the level is already too high.
Four blinks: overcrank (code 4)
The 983-0101 manual’s checks include fuel level, whether an elevated generator fuel pickup could be limiting supply, adequate LPG supply where applicable, open fuel valves, secure spark-plug leads, spark plugs and the air cleaner. Its code 4 procedure also calls for priming for 30 seconds. These steps are specific to that manual and fuel configuration; use the applicable instructions for your unit.

Generator runs but produces no AC
If the status light is steady, the manual first directs the operator to check the generator or vehicle circuit breakers and turn them on or reset them. If the light is rapidly flashing and there is no AC output, the manual describes Engine Run Only mode and directs the owner to an authorized Onan dealer.
Three-blink service fault: use the second-level code
Record the two-digit code displayed after pressing Stop once, then consult the matching manual’s fault guidance. In 983-0101, code 13 (undervoltage) calls for reducing connected appliances, particularly air conditioners and battery chargers. The manual assigns codes 12 (overvoltage), 14 (overfrequency), 19 (governor actuator) and 27 (voltage-sense) to authorized service. Do not treat these as invitations to open or adjust electrical or governor components.
Know when to stop and call for service
Let hot engine parts cool before maintenance or service; the operator manual warns they can cause severe burns. It also says service work can cause severe injury or death and limits hazardous work to trained, experienced personnel familiar with fuel, electrical and machinery hazards. Follow only the corrective actions given to the operator in the applicable manual. If they do not resolve the problem—or the manual directs dealer service—contact an authorized Onan dealer.

Cummins’ RV generator service page describes certified service providers, dealer locations, and parts and service support for RV owners. Its general FAQ says oil changes should be done every year or every 150 hours, whichever comes first; the manual for the exact generator takes precedence over that general guidance.
Confirm configuration before replacing parts
Cummins describes the QG 5500 family as including gasoline and LP variants, with self-diagnostic capability and digital voltage regulation. One listed configuration, model 5.5HGJAB-901, is specified as 60 Hz, gasoline, 5.5 kW, 120 V, 45.8 A and single phase. Those values describe that listed configuration, not every Onan 5500.
The operator manual includes spark-plug checks for an overcrank fault, but the available documentation does not establish one spark-plug part number for every 5500 variant. Before ordering a replacement, match the full model/spec and spec letter, fuel type and genuine part fit.
