Notre-Dame’s acoustics can be measured and modeled, and acoustic considerations informed restoration decisions. But the available evidence does not establish that the cathedral sounds exactly as it did before the 2019 fire. A restored building is not automatically an acoustically identical one: the result depends on its geometry, surfaces, furnishings, where a listener stands, what is making the sound and how the space is being used.
What does “the same acoustics” mean?
Room acoustics are only one part of how a place sounds. The French Ministry of Culture explains that a building’s form, properties, acoustic volumes and decoration contribute to its acoustic character, but acoustics alone cannot account for how Notre-Dame “sounded.” The wider sound environment also matters: urban noise outside, movement inside, religious ceremonies and concerts all shape the experience. French Ministry of Culture
That distinction matters when comparing before and after. A measurement of reverberation describes one aspect of a room’s response under particular conditions; it cannot, by itself, establish that every listener will experience the cathedral as sounding the same.
What is known about Notre-Dame before the fire?
Measurements and a virtual model
Sorbonne Université describes an acoustic measurement campaign conducted in 1987 to study the feasibility of a new organ. Brian FG Katz later developed a digital acoustic model in 2015 as part of the Ghost Orchestra project. The modeling combined room measurements and architectural information, with acoustic properties assigned to surfaces including stone, wood, stained glass and paintings. A detailed recording of a 2013 cathedral concert also forms part of this pre-fire documentation. Sorbonne Université

The model was intended to help assess restoration choices, not to make every material or design decision acoustically neutral. Katz said it could be used to simulate how different materials might affect the cathedral’s acoustics and guide architects.
A long reverberation
In a 2019 account by the Acoustical Society of America, Katz described the pre-fire cathedral as having a six-second reverberation time at mid-frequencies, with reverberant energy arriving from all around. That figure is a characterization of the cathedral before the fire; it is not a reported measurement of the restored building. Acoustical Society of America

How did the fire affect the sound?
A peer-reviewed survey’s summary reports that the cathedral’s 2020 post-fire condition, when the vaults had holes, had significantly shorter reverberation than the other conditions discussed. That finding describes the damaged building. It does not show what the acoustics were after restoration or how they compare with the pre-fire state. Acoustical Society of America, peer-reviewed survey
This is why a simple before-and-after claim can mislead: the post-fire ruin is a distinct acoustic condition, not a stand-in for the restored cathedral.

How did acoustic research inform the restoration?
The Ministry of Culture’s project planned recordings before, during and at the end of the works, virtual models to support scientific recommendations and public interpretation, and a database to preserve sound recordings and information about restoration practices. CNRS reported in 2025 that site measurements characterized post-fire and post-restoration states and helped inform choices, including interactions with the choir organ. CNRS
These activities show that acoustics were studied as part of the restoration and that measurements were made in more than one state of the building. The reported information does not provide a numerical post-restoration reverberation time or demonstrate that the restored cathedral matches the pre-fire sound.

Why can the experience still vary?
- Room response: Reverberation and other acoustic qualities may differ among the pre-fire, damaged and restored states.
- Geometry and surfaces: The shape of the space and materials such as stone, wood, stained glass and paintings affect how sound reflects, absorbs or disperses.
- Listener position: What someone hears depends on where they are in the cathedral.
- Sound source and use: Speech, an organ, a choir, a service and a concert do not produce the same acoustic experience.
- Soundscape: Movement and ambient sounds, including those from the surrounding city, contribute to how the place sounds beyond its room response.
Does Notre-Dame sound the same since reopening?
Notre-Dame reopened with ceremonies on 7–8 December 2024, according to the cathedral’s official page. Notre-Dame de Paris Reopening is established; exact acoustic equivalence is not. The sources cited here do not provide numerical post-reopening results or a published direct comparison demonstrating that the restored cathedral sounds exactly as it did before the fire.
The most accurate conclusion is that Notre-Dame’s acoustic character was documented and taken into account during restoration, while a claim of identical pre-fire and post-restoration sound remains unverified. A virtual concert recording can offer a way to hear documented material from the cathedral; headphones may help with that recording, but they cannot recreate the experience of being in the building.
