A natural swimming pool can look like a formal courtyard feature, a clear swim lane beside a planted basin, or a pond-like lagoon. In each design, the planted regeneration area and the way water moves between zones are part of the pool system—not just landscaping. The ideas below are adaptable layouts, not universal recipes: local climate, site conditions, engineering, safety rules and permits all shape what will work.
What makes a designed natural swimming pool work?
This article uses “natural swimming pool” to mean a designed, engineered pool system with a swimming zone, a filtration or regeneration zone, and controlled circulation. The Association of Swimming Pond and Natural Swimming Pool Professionals (ASPNSP) describes this engineered approach, while the FLL planning guide covers circulation, water purification, planting and maintenance. ASPNSP’s natural swimming pool overview and the FLL natural swimming pool design guide provide further context.
Terminology is not universal. NSW Health uses “natural swimming pool” for a different regulatory category: untreated water supplied directly from a natural source, without a circulation system. That jurisdiction-specific definition should not be applied automatically to an engineered garden pool or to projects elsewhere. See NSW Health’s public swimming pool information for its local context.
In an engineered pool, the regeneration zone is the planted or otherwise designed area that forms part of the water-treatment system. Its size and layout depend on the project; there is no single ratio or plant list that suits every site. Circulation matters too: water must move as intended through the system, rather than leaving stagnant pockets. A specialist practitioner describes integrated, adjacent and remote regeneration-zone layouts, and warns about dead spots. The practitioner’s layout guidance is useful as design advice, not a universal standard.

8 pool-and-garden layouts to consider
These are design concepts, not tested case studies. Compare them by the space left for swimming, where the regeneration area sits, how circulation connects the zones, the visual character, and the access, maintenance and local-rule implications.
| Idea | Regeneration-zone position | Garden character | Key design question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planted edge around a clear swim zone | Integrated around part of the pool | Lush, pond-like | Can the water flow and safe access remain clear? |
| Side-by-side swim lane and planted basin | Adjacent | Defined swimming area beside a planted garden | How will water move between the two zones? |
| Remote filter garden | Separate, connected by plumbing | Pool-like appearance with planting elsewhere | Can the intended circulation be maintained over the distance? |
| Naturalistic lagoon shape | Defined as part of the pool plan | Irregular outline and softened edges | Does the swim zone remain legible within the naturalistic shape? |
| Formal courtyard pool | Distinct from the geometric swim area | Restrained paving and clean lines | Do the circulation route and zone boundaries read clearly? |
| Shallow planted threshold | At the transition between garden and swim area | Soft visual connection | Does the engineered design allow it, with safe depth transitions? |
| Wildlife-friendly garden margin | Clustered planted margin | Locally appropriate wetland planting | Are plant choices suitable for the local conditions and maintenance plan? |
| Small-garden separated filter | Beside or remote from the visible swim area | Swimming space prioritized visually | Is there room and a viable route for plumbing or a connecting spillway? |
1. Planted edge around a clear swim zone
Wrap a planted regeneration area around part of the swimming space to create a lush, pond-like impression without losing a distinct place to swim. Keep circulation and safe entry routes legible; planting should not obscure how bathers move in and out. A perimeter-style arrangement is among the layouts described by Natural Swim Pond.

- Easy to Clean - The koi pond liner provides a flat surface for your pond, reducing the soil accumulation. Also can effectively prevent harmful substances in the soil from penetrating into the pond to pollute the water, so that you can clean pond easily
- Multifunctional Use - Great outdoor pond liner for any backyard waterfalls, fish/koi ponds, and other water features; Can be used in different ways: Utilize the liner for raised garden beds, sub-irrigation planters, and other self-watering projects
2. Side-by-side swim lane and planted basin
Set a clean-lined swim area beside a planted basin. A small spillway or channel can make the connection visible, but the visual link does not by itself establish that circulation is adequate. The system needs a site-specific design for how water moves through both zones. This adjacent arrangement is also documented by the practitioner’s layout guidance.
3. Remote filter garden
Place the planted regeneration basin away from the main pool and connect it by plumbing. This can leave the pool with a more conventional appearance while giving the planting its own garden setting. The trade-off is that the designer must account for the route and operation of the connecting system so water circulates as intended. A remote layout is one option described by Natural Swim Pond.

4. Naturalistic lagoon shape
An irregular outline and softened planting edges can make the pool feel like part of a naturalistic garden. Treat the outline as a visual choice, not as proof of better water quality. The swimming zone, regeneration function and circulation still need to be defined in the design, as reflected in the planning scope of the FLL guide and ASPNSP’s system description.
5. Formal courtyard pool
Pair a geometric swimming area with a distinct planted regeneration zone, restrained paving and clear circulation cues. This works as a formal design concept when the pool’s functional zones are planned as carefully as its lines. FLL’s guidance includes planning, circulation and regeneration areas; it does not make a formal style a substitute for engineering.

Buy with confidence. Ground Shield pool liner pads have a 2-year limited warranty for pool liner pad replacement.
6. Shallow planted threshold
A shallow transition can visually bridge garden and water, but include it only if the engineered design supports it. Depth changes, entry and exit, visibility and supervision all need attention. The World Health Organization’s pool guidance addresses drowning and injury risks, while the UK Health and Safety Executive’s guidance concerns pool safety and operation; neither source prescribes this particular feature.
7. Wildlife-friendly garden margin
Cluster locally appropriate wetland plants in the regeneration area and keep the swimming space more open. Choose plants for the site and the pool’s maintenance plan. Do not assume a particular layout will deliver a specific biodiversity or water-quality outcome without local evidence; planting is one of the subjects covered by FLL’s planning and maintenance guide.

8. Small-garden separated filter
Reserve the most visible footprint for swimming and put the regeneration function beside the pool or farther away, connected by a spillway or pipes. Whether this saves usable garden space depends on the actual plot, access for construction and engineering requirements. Adjacent and remote arrangements are documented by the practitioner’s layout guide, but neither is automatically feasible on a small site.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a layout for your site
Start with the garden you have, rather than picking a shape first. A designer should establish the swim area, regeneration function and circulation together, then test how the arrangement fits the intended use and the site. The FLL guide’s scope includes planning, circulation, planting, maintenance and repairs.
- Set priorities: Decide how much of the garden should be reserved for swimming versus planting, and whether the pool should read as formal, naturalistic or somewhere between.
- Choose the filter relationship: Consider whether the planted area will be integrated, adjacent or remote. Each option changes the spatial layout and the way zones connect.
- Plan circulation: Ask how water will move through the regeneration area, where dead spots could occur, and how the system will be accessed for upkeep.
- Plan access and safety: Account for entry and exit, depth changes, visibility and supervision in the finished garden.
- Check maintenance and local rules: Confirm what ongoing work the planting and system require, and whether permits, safety requirements or discharge controls apply where the project is located.
Safety, maintenance and environmental requirements
Natural-looking water does not remove pool-health or safety responsibilities. The WHO’s 2006 Guidelines for Safe Recreational Water Environments, Volume 2 covers risks including drowning and injury, microbial contamination and chemical exposure, along with control and monitoring. The UK HSE’s Health and safety in swimming pools, published in 2018 and last updated in February 2024, addresses operating and managing pools; the current edition no longer provides detailed pool-design or water-treatment information. These sources have different scopes and are not substitutes for the applicable local code or a project-specific professional review.
Pool discharges can affect sensitive water resources. Western Australia’s Water Quality Protection Note 55, first published on 30 May 2014 and updated on 23 June 2022, addresses environmental protection from planning and design through operation and potential closure. Its requirements and guidance are jurisdiction-specific; check the environmental and permitting rules for the project location.
