For a garage door that is noisy, stuck, or not working, start by identifying the symptomโnot by adjusting hardware. You can safely make limited visual checks and follow maintenance instructions in your door and opener manuals. A broken spring, frayed cable, damaged spring hardware, or door that binds or will not stay balanced calls for a trained technician. Keep people clear of a moving door, and do not operate it with a broken spring.
First, decide whether the problem is safe to check
Residential sectional doors can be heavy, and their springs and associated hardware are under high tension. DASMA warns homeowners not to adjust or repair springs, cables, or related parts. If a spring is broken, its instruction is direct: โIf a spring is broken, do not operate the door until the spring is replaced.โ DASMA Technical Data Sheet #167
- Stop and call a trained technician: a spring is broken; a cable is frayed; spring-related brackets or hardware appear damaged; or the door binds, sticks, moves unevenly, or fails an approved balance check.
- Keep clear: do not stand under a moving door or let anyone else do so. Never put fingers between door sections; use handles or suitable gripping points.
- Limit your own checks: visual inspection, cleaning, and maintenance are appropriate only as directed by the door and opener manuals. They do not make high-tension repairs safe.
DASMA also advises that extension springs have safety cables running through them and secured at both ends. If those cables are absent, contact a dealer rather than trying to install or adjust them yourself. DASMA Technical Data Sheet #167
Match the symptom to the next step
| What you notice | Safer next step |
|---|---|
| The opener runs, but the door does not close; photo-eye lenses may be dirty or obstructed. | Follow the opener manual. Overhead Door identifies dirty photo-eye lenses as one possible cause and recommends removing debris and adjusting the sensors until the indicator light stops flashing. Do not assume every opener uses identical indicators or procedures. Overhead Door troubleshooting guidance |
| The door binds, sticks, moves unevenly, or will not stay in place during a balance check described by its manual. | Stop operating it and arrange professional service. CPSC says a properly operating door is balanced and advises professional service when a door is unbalanced, binds, or sticks. Do not try to correct the balance by adjusting spring tension. CPSC Publication 523 |
| A spring is broken, a cable is frayed, or spring hardware looks damaged. | Do not operate the door. Keep people clear and call a trained technician to inspect and repair the system. DASMA Technical Data Sheet #167 |
| A safety-reversal or entrapment-protection feature does not work. | Do not rely on the opener as safe. Consult its manual and arrange service. Safety-feature requirements and tests vary by operator model and have changed over time; CPSCโs regulatory history is not a universal test procedure for every current opener. What routine maintenance canโand cannotโdo
Routine checks can help you notice a problem early; they are not a substitute for repairs by a trained technician. DASMA recommends monthly safety checks and an annual technician visit. Its checklist includes basic inspection items, but the manufacturerโs manual should govern the checks and any tools or test procedures. If a check reveals a problem, refer it to a trained technician rather than attempting a tension adjustment. DASMA Technical Data Sheet #167 and DASMA monthly checklist

Overhead Door describes planned maintenance as inspection, cleaning, lubrication, operation checks, and safety-system testing. It advises consulting both manuals and unplugging the automatic opener before planned maintenance. Follow the instructions for your specific equipment; do not treat a general checklist as authorization to work on springs, cables, or brackets. Overhead Door maintenance guidance
Lubrication has a narrow role
If the manual permits it, garage-door spray lubricant may help with squeaky springs. Overhead Door cautions against lubricating plastic hinges. If noise persists, arrange professional service; lubricant will not repair a broken spring, damaged cable, balance problem, or failing hardware. How to choose professional service
For a spring, cable, balance, bracket, or related hardware problem, look for a trained technician familiar with your door system. Share the doorโs make and model if available, describe what happened, and mention any visible damage. Ask whether the technician is trained or authorized for that system and what inspection or repair is needed. Do not compare a DIY spring kit with professional service as if they were equivalent options: the tension hazard makes this a safety decision, not just a cost comparison.
The cited guidance does not establish a repair price or verify local providers. Availability, qualifications, and applicable requirements depend on location and equipment, so confirm them with the provider and consult local requirements where relevant.

Why opener safety features deserve attention
Automatic door operators can create an entrapment hazard if their protective features fail. CPSC materials describe requirements for newer residential operators and note that the rules have changed over time. The agency also recorded 62 deaths and 49 injuries involving children under 15 associated with automatic garage doors and openers from March 1982 through November 1996, as well as 75 consumer complaints during that period. Those are historical incident figures, not a current risk rate. CPSC garage-door operator information
Use the exact test and maintenance procedure in your opener manual. If a reversal or entrapment-protection feature fails, stop relying on the opener and arrange service; do not infer that a test for another model applies to yours.
