The magazine featured it in Issue 130, February 2001; WOOD’s project page appeared online in 2020 and links to the publisher’s store listing.
What the Nathan Hale pipe box plan makes
WOOD Magazine describes a country-style box based on an Early American classic design. Its intended arrangement has a top compartment for clay smoking pipes and a drawer below for tobacco. The magazine also presents the project as a faithful replica of a period object it says was found hanging beside a fireplace at the Nathan Hale Homestead. That is the magazine’s account; the surviving object’s age and provenance are not independently established here.
The plan appeared in WOOD Magazine Issue 130, February 2001. WOOD’s current online project page, titled “Nathan Hale pipe box Woodworking Plan,” was published March 31, 2020. The older magazine appearance and the later web-page date refer to different publications of the project.
Materials and construction described in the issue
The issue text names pine for the box, along with a small brass knob and 4d antique-style nails. It instructs the maker to cut a 72-inch length from a 1×7¼×96-inch pine board and plane it to ⅝ inch for parts A–E. Those details are not a complete shopping list: check the full plan’s drawings and cut list for exact part dimensions before purchasing lumber or hardware.

#1 Best Overall
The indexed issue text describes profiling the back with a scrollsaw or bandsaw, drilling holes, sanding, applying a round-over, then assembling with glue, clamps and nails. It also mentions staining the box and treating the brass knob to give it a dull, aged appearance. These are details from the issue text, not a verified complete tool list or a substitute for the full instructions.
Buying the plan
The WOOD project page links to the WOOD Store listing. The store listing showed the plan at $5.95 when checked; price and availability can change, so confirm them on the publisher’s page before ordering.

Using the box today
Build it to match its original display purpose if you want a pipe box with a tobacco drawer. For a decorative keepsake or general small-item storage, the form can still be useful; the issue text notes that the storage may hold other suitable small items. Keep the distinction clear: changing what goes inside does not change the historical purpose the publisher assigns to the original design.
For either use, the full plan matters most for accurate cuts and fit. The magazine excerpt identifies the wood and selected hardware, but does not expose every measurement needed to reproduce the project from that excerpt alone.
