Repeated mowing has been associated with tougher defenses and altered growth traits in silverleaf nightshade, a spiny plant with poisonous berries. But two studies of South Texas populations do not show that mowing increases every measure of plant success—or establish mowing as a weed-control prescription.
What is silverleaf nightshade?
Silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) is a spiny plant with poisonous berries. The findings discussed here concern this species, studied in South Texas, within its native range; they should not be generalized to other poisonous weeds.
What did the 2024 mowing study find?
A study published in Scientific Reports on April 7, 2024, compared mowed and unmowed South Texas populations. Researchers reported that flowers on frequently mowed plants were larger but lighter in one comparison, and that mowed plants had higher spine density. Caterpillar responses varied with the insect’s life stage and the treatment. The authors concluded that mowing compromised floral traits and enhanced plant defenses against herbivores—not that every trait, or the plant’s overall fitness, improved. The Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station’s 2024 coverage also describes deeper roots, more spines and staggered seed germination in plants under mowing-associated conditions. It reports that roots reached nearly five feet deep; that is an approximate figure from the university summary, not a universal maximum. Read the university’s research summary.

Did mowing increase seed production?
Not across the board. A 2021 study using field, laboratory and greenhouse experiments found fewer fruits and fewer total seeds per plant in mowed plants. At the same time, their seeds had higher mass and germinated more often and faster. Those contrasting results show why “stronger” is an imprecise shorthand: seed quantity fell while some measures of seed quality or germination changed in the other direction. Herbivore effects also differed. Tobacco hornworm caterpillars gained more mass on seedlings from unmowed plants, while other tested insects showed different patterns. The results depend on which plant trait, insect and life stage is being considered; they do not amount to a single, uniform increase in resistance or plant performance.

Does this mean mowing eradicates or “turbocharges” the weed?
Neither conclusion is established by these studies. They describe biological differences associated with mowing, not a controlled comparison proving that mowing eradicates the plant or that it makes every plant more successful. The university coverage presents the findings as information for management planning and further research. Frequent mowing alone should not be assumed to eliminate silverleaf nightshade.

First verify the plant’s identity, then seek advice suited to your location and site from a local cooperative extension office or a qualified weed-management professional. The cited studies do not compare validated consumer treatments, so they do not support a universal herbicide recommendation.

Avoid assuming tilling is a safe shortcut: UC Weed Science warns that silverleaf nightshade can spread through regenerative rhizomic roots, which may propagate over multiple seasons.
