A motion-activated water gun turret uses a motion sensor to signal an Arduino, which activates a relay wired across a toy gun’s firing switch. It can fire when movement enters the sensor’s detection zone, but the documented design does not locate or track a target. The simplest version is stationary; making it mobile adds a separate vehicle and obstacle-sensing system.
How the turret works
In the basic design, the control chain is motion sensor → Arduino → relay → firing switch. The sensor detects movement in its field of view and signals the Arduino. The Arduino switches the relay, which closes a circuit wired in parallel with the toy gun’s firing switch. Electrically, that is like pressing the switch.
Jason Poel Smith’s Make: project tutorial, published April 20, 2015, describes the controller as an Arduino and an infrared motion sensor. Its example uses a motorized Cyclone Water Blaster; that is a historical example, not confirmation of current availability.
Choose the project scope

The vehicle’s ultrasonic sensor is for obstacle navigation, not for aiming the gun. The repository also names AFMotor, NewPing, and Servo libraries for its particular vehicle code and hardware configuration; check compatibility before using that code with different boards or revisions.

Select a compatible toy gun
The key requirement is not a particular brand: use a motorized toy gun that fires continuously while its trigger is held and has a firing switch you can access for external control. The Make: tutorial notes that switch layouts vary. Its example has separate left, right, and firing controls with a shared positive connection, while another toy may use a simpler switch.
- Inspect the actual switch and wiring before adapting the circuit.
- Do not assume another gun has the same terminals or control arrangement as the tutorial’s example.
- Check the chosen gun and electronic components’ specifications before connecting them.
Build and wiring considerations
Make: recommends finding the gun’s switch and soldering extension wires to its terminals, then prototyping relays in parallel with the switches. A relay closing across a switch simulates a button press. The tutorial says a diode across the relay coil helps protect the microcontroller from voltage spikes when the relay turns off.

The cited build used relays requiring 20 mA. Its materials guidance says to use a driver circuit or relay shield if the selected relay requires more than 30 mA. Those figures are guidance for the components described in that tutorial, not a guarantee of compatibility with every relay, Arduino, or toy gun.
After verifying the circuit, the tutorial’s build mounts it on perfboard, places the electronics in a project enclosure, attaches the gun to a stable platform, and connects the sensor to the controller. Treat this as a project outline, not a universal wiring diagram: the toy’s switch layout and the components’ specifications determine how the circuit must be adapted.

What motion activation can—and cannot—do
A single PIR-style motion sensor responds to movement in its detection zone. The cited project sources do not establish precise distance measurement, identification of people, or automatic aiming. The basic mechanism should therefore be understood as zone-triggered firing, not target tracking.
The Make: article estimates the project will take 1–3 hours; that is the publisher’s estimate, not a tested duration for every builder. It also advises care when opening the gun housing, soldering wires, and handling the circuit board. The project sources do not specify a tested safe distance or universal safe operating conditions, so use the toy only in a controlled setting and do not assume the build is harmless in every environment.
