The rail setup initially showed chatter and limited rigidity; the article then describes additional support intended to address those problems. It is a report of one machine—not a standardized MPCNC upgrade path or measured proof of improved performance.
What the featured MPCNC upgrade includes
Utsanjan Maity’s May 8, 2024 account of Alex Reiner’s machine describes several related modifications. The source page was not directly accessible, so details beyond its indexed description—including rail dimensions, costs and cutting parameters—are not established. Read the article description.
- Linear rails: The build uses VEVOR linear rails in place of the machine’s existing motion arrangement.
- Extrusion and adapters: Aluminum extrusion and custom printed adapters were added after the initial rail setup showed limited rigidity and chatter.
- Z-axis backlash adjustment: An adjustable carrier holds a second lead screw nut opposed to the first, taking up clearance in the Z-axis arrangement.
- Z-axis coupling: The build uses a Lovejoy-style coupler.
- Shop-focused changes: The account also describes improved workholding, an enclosure intended to contain chips, and control-electronics upgrades.
The account says the added extrusion and adapters addressed the rigidity issue sufficiently for Reiner to try cutting aluminum. That is a description of the creator’s project, not independently verified material capability, measured accuracy, or a guarantee that another MPCNC can cut aluminum safely or successfully.
Why this is not a standard MPCNC upgrade recipe
Linear rails and the associated extrusion are custom choices in this build. Fit and results depend on the machine’s version, rail dimensions, frame and tool mount, as well as the Z-axis hardware. The available account gives no controlled before-and-after measurements, so it does not establish how much chatter or deflection changed, or how the modification compares with an unmodified machine.

Adding rails, adapters and frame support also means taking on extra design and fitment work. Treat the conversion as a project to evaluate against a specific stiffness or motion problem—not as a universal parts list or a guaranteed improvement. The account does not establish a cost or performance ranking for the alternatives.

Identify the build and measure the rails
V1 Engineering’s official MPCNC Primo parts list distinguishes printed-part sets by rail outside diameter: C for 23.5 mm, F for 25 mm, and J for 25.4 mm (1 inch). It specifically advises measuring rails before printing. Those are Primo printed-part choices; they do not establish that Alex Reiner’s rail conversion uses any of those sizes or that a Primo part will fit a different MPCNC version.

Verify the motion and tool interfaces
Before adapting a rail conversion, check the frame geometry, rail mounting, carriage arrangement, Z-axis lead screw and nut carrier, and the router or spindle mount. The official Primo documentation lists a 5 mm-to-8 mm coupler; the Lovejoy-style coupling in Reiner’s report is a different design. Select neither by name alone: the shaft and lead-screw dimensions and the coupling arrangement must match the actual machine.
For tool mounts, the documentation names options for the Makita RT0701C and DeWalt 660 routers. These are documented compatibility options, not an endorsement or a claim that either was used in the featured conversion.

What an older MPCNC owner may be able to reuse
Forum discussions about moving an older machine to Primo describe possible reuse of controllers, stepper motors, bearings and electrical parts when the existing build’s dimensions and components permit it. They also point to changes in hardware, belts, pulleys and idlers. This is conditional community advice, not a compatibility guarantee; compare each part with the current build requirements rather than assuming that an older machine’s components will transfer.
A 2023 forum poster described buying a Jackpot board, endstops and wiring, and a 24 V power supply while reviving an older machine. That is one owner’s build, not a required Primo parts list. The 2020 discussion about an original MPCNC-to-Primo upgrade and the 2023 discussion about extra parts for that conversion are useful as examples of the questions to resolve, not as universal bills of materials.

Official Primo parts and build-bundle boundaries
The official Primo documentation lists common hardware and components including five NEMA 17 motors, GT2 belt and pulleys, bearings, a lead screw and nut, a 5 mm-to-8 mm coupler, lubricant, a control board and endstops. It cautions against steel-reinforced belts and specifies fiber-reinforced belts. For Burly-to-Primo updates, it lists 10 mm GT2 pulleys, idlers, fasteners and 10 mm belt; it says 6 mm belt can be used but suggests upgrading to 10 mm. Check the documentation for the requirements relevant to the particular version and build.
V1 Engineering’s Primo build-bundle listing describes a bundle with motors, belt, pulleys, idlers, power supply, wiring, endstops, bearings, lead screw, coupler, lubricant and hardware. The listing says printed parts, rails and a spindle or tool are still required, while a control board is optional. Inventory and listing contents can change, so confirm the current product page before relying on it as a complete parts list.

A practical decision sequence
- Record what you have. Identify the MPCNC version and measure rail outside diameter; note belt, pulley, idler, lead-screw, motor and tool-mount details.
- Define the problem. Decide whether the goal is reducing Z-axis backlash, improving frame stiffness, changing motion hardware, containing chips, or refreshing electronics. A change should address a specific need.
- Check the interfaces. Confirm that proposed rails, printed adapters, extrusion, nut carrier and coupler fit together and suit the existing frame and tool arrangement. Do not infer dimensions from the featured account; it does not state them.
- Separate reusable parts from replacements. Compare each older component with the relevant Primo requirements. Treat forum suggestions as starting points for inspection, not proof of fit.
- Plan for the whole build. Account for workholding, chip containment, wiring and controls alongside motion hardware; the featured machine’s changes span all of these areas.
- Validate the result on your machine. Recheck fasteners, movement and tool clearance after assembly, then assess performance on the actual setup. The published account offers no measured gain that can stand in for that evaluation.
Availability is separate from compatibility
A V1 Engineering forum reply from August 2022 said Burly-to-Primo kits had stopped selling at that time and described some belt, pulley and idler components as available through the shop while hardware was not. That historical statement does not establish current availability. Check the current parts documentation and product listings rather than treating the 2022 post as an inventory update: 2022 discussion of Burly-to-Primo kit availability.
