Mormon Pine furniture is a regional style shaped by the woods and practical needs of early settlers in Utah. WOOD Magazine’s 2020 profile shows how Utah craftsman Dale Peel carries that tradition forward—making historical reproductions as well as new furniture that draws on its robust proportions, traditional joinery, and distinctive finishes.
What is Mormon Pine furniture?
In a feature published December 30, 2020, WOOD Magazine describes Mormon Pine as a furniture tradition associated with settlers in the Great Salt Lake region. Its account says settlers began arriving in the late 1840s and, before the transcontinental railroad reached the region, relied on local makers and local materials for furniture. The magazine identifies cottonwood, Douglas fir, spruce, and ponderosa pine as available woods. It notes that spruce was called “white pine” and ponderosa “yellow pine” in the article.
The furniture was built to be sturdy and useful. Common features cited by the magazine include through-mortise-and-tenon doors, dovetailed drawers and casework, turned legs and spindles, and solid proportions. The feature also describes Shaker, Hoosier, Scandinavian, and Windsor influences. Those traits offer a way to recognize the style, not a rigid recipe every piece must follow.
How Dale Peel brings the style forward
The profile places furnituremaker and artist Dale Peel in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, in a converted cheese factory 60 miles south of Provo. It says he began making furniture full time in 1991. Peel produces both reproductions of early furniture and new designs in the style, including a Great Basin line with substantial dovetails and pine components up to 2 inches thick.

These details describe Peel and his workshop as presented in the 2020 feature; they do not establish his current business status. The magazine’s profile is a detailed account of his practice, rather than an independent historical survey of the style.
Wood choice, joinery, and surface character
Choosing the wood
Peel reportedly buys spruce, fir, and cottonwood from local mills. He uses less ponderosa pine because, in his experience, sap can bleed through finishes. For spindle work, he says he dries cottonwood to 6–8% moisture content. That is a detail of his reported practice, not a universal drying standard.

Building strong joints
The style’s dovetailed drawers and casework are both structural and visible expressions of careful work. In the method shown by WOOD Magazine, Peel cuts dovetail pins on a table saw with a homemade jig set at 7°, cuts the tails on a bandsaw, then refines them with a chisel and mallet. The feature says his illustrated setup uses a 10-inch dado set; with an 8-inch set, it notes, a 1/2-inch sled may be needed. These are details of that setup, not general machine-safety guidance or a complete project plan.
Painting and faux grain
Early makers sometimes painted softwood or used faux graining to suggest the appearance of oak, walnut, mahogany, and other figured hardwoods. Peel’s described faux-mahogany finish begins with a flat acrylic-latex base, followed by tinted alkyd glaze. He builds darker pattern layers, then scratches and blends them with improvised tools such as cardboard or wood to reveal lighter tones; the feature says he finishes the effect with varnish.

For painted finishes, Peel uses contrasting coats, selective sanding, and dark glaze to create an aged surface. He also simulates wear with plane marks, scribe scratches, and marks made with a mallet. The profile says he applies lacquer over painted finishes but avoids it over faux grain because it lifts the pattern.
How to compare pieces in the style
Because Mormon Pine is not a single fixed design, look at how a piece combines materials, construction, finish, and purpose. The magazine feature does not provide a current market comparison or assess sellers’ build quality.
