PerthNow reported on 2 October 2025 that $1.525 million in Australian Government Urban Rivers and Catchments Program funding had been allocated to three waterway projects in the City of Canning, Western Australia. The work covers weed control and revegetation at two sites and a drainage retrofit at a third. The report said construction was scheduled to start in summer 2026; that was a planned timeframe, not confirmation that work has since begun.
How much funding is going to Canning waterways?
PerthNow reported the following allocations from the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program in 2025:
| Site | Planned work | Reported program allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Yagan Reserve | Weed control and revegetation | $745,000 (PerthNow, 2025) |
| Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore | Weed control and revegetation | $220,000 (PerthNow, 2025) |
| Queens Park Basin | Drainage retrofit | $560,000 (PerthNow, 2025) |
The three allocations total $1.525 million, as reported by PerthNow. Water Corporation was also reported to be contributing $100,000 to the Queens Park Basin project. The article does not provide a complete project-cost breakdown or quantify other partners’ support, so the $100,000 should not be treated as the full cost of that work.
What work is planned at each site?
Yagan Reserve
The reported $745,000 allocation is for weed control and revegetation. Those activities are intended to address invasive weeds and restore native vegetation; the report does not state the area to be treated or measurable ecological targets.

Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore
The foreshore project has a reported allocation of $220,000 for similar weed-control and revegetation work. PerthNow described the projects as responding to concerns including habitat loss and poor water quality, but did not provide site-by-site baselines or outcome measures.
Queens Park Basin
The $560,000 program allocation is for a drainage retrofit, with a separately reported $100,000 contribution from Water Corporation. The work is intended to improve water flow and contribute to addressing poor water quality and slope instability. The news report does not describe the engineering design or give a complete account of project funding.
Who is involved, and what is the wider program?
PerthNow named the Australian Government Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, City of Canning, Water Corporation, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Whadjuk traditional owners and local environmental groups as funders or supporters. Beyond the program allocation and Water Corporation contribution noted above, the report did not quantify each party’s financial contribution.

The three projects sit within the wider $10 million Cleaning up the Canning program, which PerthNow said aims to improve the ecological health and condition of the Canning, Southern and Wungong rivers. The 2025 report gave March 2028 as the program’s expected completion date; this is a target, not confirmation of completion.
When was work due to start, and could access be affected?
The October 2025 report said work was scheduled to start in summer 2026. It also warned that temporary disruptions could occur at project sites during construction and revegetation, and said the City of Canning would provide advance notice of any closures or restricted access. These are announcement-era plans, not a current works or access advisory. Check the City of Canning’s latest notices before visiting a site or relying on the reported schedule.
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said: “Healthy waterways are the lifeblood of our city. They provide habitat for native birds, fish and plants, help filter stormwater and create beautiful places for people to connect with nature,” according to PerthNow’s 2 October 2025 report. Hall also said the work would stabilise eroded banks, improve biodiversity and build resilience to flooding. These are stated aims, not measured results.
