Riverton residents objected to a planned barbecue at Montes Park because they say the small park is not suited to longer visits, has no public toilets and is already used for dog exercise. A petition was presented to the City of Canning in July 2025, but council referred it to the CEO for action rather than making a final decision on the barbecue.
What was planned for Montes Park?
The City of Canning’s proposed upgrade included a barbecue, a drinking fountain, picnic settings and fencing around the playground. Residents opposing the barbecue submitted petition PET-004-25, which PerthNow reported had 66 signatures, including 48 verified as City of Canning electors. These are figures reported by the newspaper, not independently audited counts. PerthNow’s report covers the petition and residents’ concerns.
Why did residents oppose the barbecue?
Toilets and the length of visits
In a deputation, Riverton resident Sandra D’Annolfo said locals had raised concerns after being notified of the proposal in December 2024. She described Montes Park as small and not intended for long stays, and argued that the lack of toilets would create problems for visitors. “It’s not a long-stay park equipped with toilets,” she said. D’Annolfo also said visitors had knocked on nearby residents’ doors to ask to use private toilets. These are residents’ accounts and arguments, not findings established by the City.
Existing use and dogs
D’Annolfo said a barbecue could attract dogs to a park used for dog exercise. The City’s parks directory lists Montes Park as an approved dog exercise area, alongside play equipment, a drinking fountain and a basketball court. The listing describes the park’s facilities but does not establish how often dogs or other visitors use it. The City of Canning parks directory also does not list a barbecue at Montes Park.

Installation and maintenance costs
D’Annolfo said installation would start at $50,000, with further maintenance costs. That figure was her claim in the deputation, not an independently verified City estimate or a published project cost breakdown.
Residents’ proposed alternative
D’Annolfo pointed to Riverton Reserve and the river as alternatives, citing public toilets, lighting, gazebos, seating, views, nature and parking. The available records do not compare the sites’ access, capacity, costs or suitability, so this is the alternative she proposed rather than a City assessment.

What did council decide?
At its 29 July 2025 meeting, council unanimously voted 10–0 to receive petition PET-004-25 and refer it to the CEO for action. The official minutes record that procedural step; they do not show a substantive vote for or against keeping the barbecue in the upgrade. The City’s council meeting and minutes page provides the official record.
Is the barbecue still planned?
The available information does not establish the proposal’s final status. The City’s current parks directory lists Montes Park’s facilities but not a barbecue; that omission is not an announcement that the proposal was cancelled, nor proof that a barbecue is not present.

A March 2026 City financial-report excerpt recommended reallocating excess funds for Montes Park infrastructure upgrades through the mid-year review to Bywater Park Bore, Sporting and Court renewal, and Nurdi Playground Fencing. The excerpt does not identify the barbecue as a funded or removed item and does not confirm whether it was approved or installed. The City’s financial and council records are the source of that funding note.

The disagreement is about whether the proposed amenity fits this particular park: residents raised the lack of toilets, the park’s size and use, possible ongoing costs, and an alternative location with amenities. The petition demonstrates that objections were submitted, but those arguments should not be read as measured findings about park demand, dog incidents or the barbecue’s costs.
