Apple Miami Worldcenter opened in downtown Miami on January 24, 2025. It is not an entirely wooden building: the store combines mass-timber members with structural steel. The more precise distinction is that it is Apple’s first store with extensive mass-timber construction, bringing engineered wood into a prominent standalone retail pavilion.
Where is Apple Miami Worldcenter, and when did it open?
The store is in downtown Miami at the Miami Worldcenter development. Apple announced its opening for January 24, 2025, and described it as the company’s tenth store in Miami. Apple’s current U.S. store directory lists Miami Worldcenter, confirming it as an operating location rather than a proposal.

Is the Apple Store made of wood?
Partly. Apple describes a regionally sourced mass-timber structure, while project contractor IW Mass Timber describes a hybrid system of galvanized structural-steel framing and mass-timber members. Calling the store “wooden” is shorthand, not a literal description of every structural or finish component.
What mass timber means
Mass timber is engineered wood used in substantial structural elements, rather than wood applied only as a decorative finish. In this project, the timber works alongside steel. IW Mass Timber reports that the steel-to-timber connections required coordination and fabrication work, and that the team adjusted cantilever camber as the structure responded to moisture conditions.

Why this is a notable retail project
Construction Specifier identifies it as Apple’s first store with extensive mass-timber construction. That makes the project notable within Apple’s retail portfolio; the available sources do not establish it as the first timber building in U.S. retail generally.
How does mass timber shape the store?
The building is designed as an open retail pavilion rather than a closed box. Construction Specifier describes a curved perimeter roof, plaster walls and an open central space reached through glazed entrances. Its reporting also identifies a structural wood wall system, biomass-based terrazzo flooring and attention to acoustics.
Rank #2
Apple presents the store as biophilic, with planted areas connecting the building to its surroundings. Coverage describes public planting and a roof garden as part of the setting. The timber structure is therefore part of a larger architectural approach that combines the building’s form, interior materials and landscape.
What environmental benefits does Apple claim?
Apple says regionally sourced mass timber and other low-carbon materials significantly reduced the carbon intensity of construction. The company also says store operations use 100 percent renewable energy and are carbon neutral. These are Apple’s claims; the available project coverage does not provide an independently measured carbon audit or a quantified project-specific reduction. The operational carbon-neutrality claim should not be read as an independent assessment of embodied construction emissions.

But the sources do not provide enough project data to calculate those effects here: they do not state timber volume, species, supplier chain or a measured lifecycle comparison.

Why this matters beyond one Apple Store
Miami Worldcenter shows one way mass timber can be integrated into a recognizable retail building: as part of a hybrid structure, paired with steel and coordinated with a distinctive roof, glazed entrances and planted public space. Its significance is not that it proves every retail project should be built from timber, or that it supplies a quantified carbon result. It demonstrates that engineered wood can serve a substantial structural role in a high-profile store while contributing to the building’s architectural identity.
