Check the plant’s conditions rather than watering on a fixed weekday: light, temperature, season, and pot size all affect how quickly its soil dries.
Identify the plant and choose a suitable spot
“Money tree” and “money plant” can refer to different plants. This guide covers Pachira aquatica; check the plant label if the exact species matters. North Carolina State Extension says, “The money tree prefers indirect sunlight or a mix of sun and shade.” Direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Place it where it receives bright to moderate indirect light. An Ask Extension response dated November 30, 2023, suggests 6–8 hours of this kind of light and notes that an east-facing window may work. Treat those hours as practical guidance, not a universal light threshold. The same response advises avoiding drafts and strong direct heat. North Carolina State Extension gives 65–75°F as the plant’s preferred temperature range and describes it as thriving in humid conditions.
Water when the soil is ready
Check the soil before watering. Extension recommendations range from letting the top inch to the top two inches dry. When that upper layer has dried, water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. A weekly schedule cannot account for differences in pot size, light, temperature, or season.

The November 30, 2023 Ask Extension response says the top inch may typically dry every one to two weeks, while noting that water needs can rise in spring and summer. Use that interval only as a rough example. In winter, when the plant grows less actively, it generally needs less water.
Use a draining pot and well-drained soil
Choose a pot with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. North Carolina State Extension lists peat moss, perlite, loam, or sand as possible mix components for container growing. Do not leave the pot sitting in collected water: standing water and persistently soggy soil can contribute to root problems. Empty the saucer or cachepot after watering.

Repot when the plant has outgrown its pot, preferably in early spring. An Ask Extension response dated November 30, 2023, recommends increasing the pot diameter by 1–2 inches. Another, older UGA Extension response suggests repotting every two years, but that is a general suggestion rather than a requirement; the plant’s condition is the better guide.
Prune and fertilize conservatively
Routine heavy pruning is not necessary for every money tree. If you prune, UGA Extension advises cutting just in front of a leaf or node, removing dead twigs, and taking no more than one third of a stem at a time.

During active growth, follow the fertilizer label and use a conservative rate. Extension responses give different seasonal schedules, and overfeeding can burn leaves; avoid applying more than the product instructions recommend.

A single symptom rarely identifies a single cause. First check soil moisture and drainage, then review light, drafts, temperature changes, recent repotting, and signs of pests.

Yellow leaves
Overwatering and too much direct sunlight are possible causes. Low humidity or inadequate nutrients may also contribute. Check whether the mix is staying wet and whether direct sun reaches the leaves before changing the watering routine or adding fertilizer.
Drooping or dropped leaves
Both too much and too little water can contribute, as can temperature fluctuations, direct sun, or pests. Leaf shedding may also follow root disturbance after repotting. Review recent changes as well as the plant’s current soil and location.

Brown or brittle tips
Direct sun, dry air, or airflow from a vent or fan may be contributing. Check whether the plant is exposed to strong sun or a persistent draft.
Soft trunk or unpleasant smell
These can be urgent warning signs associated with root rot. Check for standing water and persistently soggy soil, and address the drainage problem promptly.
Visible pests
Aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs are among the pests noted in Extension guidance. If you use insecticidal soap, follow the product label.
Is a money tree safe for pets?
The ASPCA lists Pachira aquatica as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. That listing is specific to this identified species, so confirm the plant’s identity rather than relying on the common name alone.
