Mistbox is a retrofit that sprays a fine water mist near an outdoor air-conditioner condenser. Evaporating water can cool the air entering the condenser, but that plausible mechanism does not establish a reliable household energy-saving percentage. The widely cited claim of “up to 30% or more” came from Mistbox’s 2016 company announcement, not an independent test. The product’s model MB101 is no longer sold on Lowe’s website, and its water use, climate suitability, maintenance, and support matter as much as the theory.
How Mistbox works
Mistbox MB101 is a condenser pre-cooling system, not a replacement for an air conditioner. Its control unit, water filter, hose, and misting manifold are installed at the outdoor unit. The guide describes solar power for the control unit and setup through a phone app and Wi-Fi. The system sprays fine droplets into the air near the condenser; as water evaporates, it absorbs heat and can lower the temperature of the air entering the equipment. A cooler intake can make it easier for the condenser to reject heat. The actual effect depends on conditions, including how much of the spray evaporates before it reaches the unit or ground.
That is the basic principle of evaporative pre-cooling. It is not proof that a particular retrofit will reduce a particular home’s electricity use by a predictable amount.
Does Mistbox really save energy?
The most useful distinction is between evidence for evaporative pre-cooling generally and evidence for Mistbox specifically. A 2026 study by Alsilbi and colleagues tested a different setup: a 1.5-ton split air conditioner in Karbala, Iraq, with a 100 mm cellulose pad positioned 55 cm from the condenser. At outdoor temperatures of 36–48°C, the study reported power-consumption reductions of up to 24.56% and coefficient-of-performance improvements of up to 37.47%. Those are results for that equipment and test configuration in those conditions, not a Mistbox product test or a forecast for a household elsewhere. Read the study.

An Okayama University record describes an apartment-house investigation that included spraying a room air conditioner’s outdoor unit. The record shows the approach has been investigated, but its accessible summary does not establish a universal savings rate or a Mistbox-specific result. View the Okayama University record.
Mistbox’s 2016 press release claimed savings of “up to 30% or more.” That is a historical marketing claim, not an independently verified result; the same announcement’s planned $399 retail price is historical, not a current price. See the 2016 announcement. A 2016 Gadgeteer review compared thermostat runtime on days when the device was enabled and disabled, but the reviewer noted that the comparison was not scientific and that weather and other variables differed. It cannot establish typical savings. Read the review.

It can also be repurposed for farm watering, nursery irrigation, and outdoor heat reduction around pools, trampolines, and patios.
Climate, humidity, and water use
Evaporative cooling is more effective when outdoor air can absorb additional moisture. In humid weather, the potential cooling effect is reduced. ACCA also raises a concern for humid conditions: if a system runs less, it may remove less moisture from indoor air. This is a factor to weigh, not a quantified outcome established for every home. Read ACCA’s technical discussion.
Water use is part of the tradeoff. ACCA gives an illustrative estimate of about 32 gallons per hour for a theoretical 3-ton system at specified outdoor conditions. This is an engineering calculation, not a measurement of Mistbox consumption or a fixed rate for the product. Actual use depends on runtime and weather, and water that does not evaporate may be wasted. See the estimate and its assumptions.

- Saves Energy - reduces the run-time of compressor using evapotransporation for more effiecient AC operation.
- Easy to Install - Plumbs to existing water source (garden hose or faucet). No programming required!
- Automatic Operation - uses existing 24 VAC thermostat control, No programming required! (basic wiring instructions included).
- Small Droplet Size - 100 micron droplets = evaporation without over wetting surrounding areas.
- Low Water Usage - 1.8 GPH foggers (3 per system), operate only while the AC compressor operates.
For a home in a hot, dry climate, evaporation may be more favorable than in humid conditions, but the study result above cannot tell you whether a Mistbox would save more electricity than it costs in water, maintenance, and installation. There is no comparable consumer trial here that resolves that calculation across homes.

The MB101 guide describes mounting the control unit where it can receive sunlight, connecting a water supply, positioning the misting manifold, and completing setup through the app and Wi-Fi. It also covers the water filter, filter-life maintenance, nozzle cleaning, and winter storage. These requirements mean the retrofit adds components that need inspection and upkeep. Consult the MB101 guide.

A 2016 product spotlight reported that two units failed and wasted substantial water. That is an anecdote, not a measured failure rate, but it is a reminder that reliability should not be assumed. Read the product spotlight. Current app support, compatible-part availability, and service support have not been established.
Is Mistbox still available?
Lowe’s identifies the product as the Mistbox MB101 air-conditioner condenser pad and currently marks it as no longer sold on Lowes.com. The 2016 announcement of planned Lowe’s distribution does not establish present-day production or stock. Check Lowe’s listing.
If considering a used unit or a listing elsewhere, confirm that it is the MB101, check its condition and included components, and verify that filters, nozzles, app setup, and other needed support are available before relying on it. The manual documents the filter and nozzles as maintenance parts, but current compatible-parts stock is not established.
Quick Recap
What to weigh before adding a condenser mister
- Climate: Consider whether your outdoor air is dry enough for meaningful evaporation; high humidity can limit the effect.
- Evidence: Treat broad savings percentages as unproven for your home unless they come from a comparable test of the product and conditions.
- Water: Include water use and possible runoff in the cost and environmental tradeoff.
- Equipment and upkeep: Check compatibility with your condenser, installation needs, filter and nozzle maintenance, and winter care.
- Support: Confirm current availability of the product, app functions, and compatible parts rather than assuming an older unit remains supported.
