It includes full-size patterns for shaping the fuselage, detailed instructions, and a materials list. WOOD Magazine lists finished dimensions of 15 inches wide with the rotors extended, 7-3/8 inches wide folded, 17-3/4 inches deep, and 4-7/8 inches high. See the official project page.
What is the Mil-Spec Apache Helicopter plan?
It is a WOOD Magazine woodworking plan for a toy based on the AH-64 Apache, which the project description says first saw service in 1986. Maple dowels represent the helicopter’s weapons. The instructions cover a wooden model with spinning, folding rotors; they are not engineering drawings or instructions for building a working aircraft.
The project appeared in WOOD Magazine issue 259 in March 2019. The publisher’s project page was updated January 8, 2024. It credits Craig Ruegsegger as producer and Kevin Boyle as project designer, with Roxanne LeMoine and Lorna Johnson credited for illustrations. WOOD Magazine’s project page is the current reference for the plan’s identity.
What does the finished wooden helicopter measure?
WOOD Magazine gives the finished dimensions as 15 inches wide with rotors extended, 17-3/4 inches deep, and 4-7/8 inches high. Fold the rotors and the width becomes 7-3/8 inches. The reduced width is useful for storage; the stated dimensions describe the completed toy, not a full-size Apache or a scale conversion.

What materials and hardware does the project call for?
The March 2019 project article specifies cherry and maple stock, along with maple and cherry dowels. It also lists wheels, axle pegs, machine screws, lock nuts, and washers. The article’s supply list identifies these hardware quantities and sizes:
- Six 7/32 × 1-inch axle pegs and one 1/2-inch axle peg
- Two 1-inch-diameter wood wheels
- Four 8-32 × 5/8-inch machine screws and four 8-32 lock nuts

The exact lumber-piece dimensions and dowel lengths belong to the project’s original materials list. Check those details in the plan or accompanying issue before cutting stock; the item sizes above should not be used as substitutes for the full cut list.
