A useful potting bench needs a stable, comfortable work surface, room for the supplies you use most, and a growing medium suited to your plants. The right dimensions and add-ons depend on your space, tasks, weather exposure, and how you prefer to work; no single bench size or accessory is essential for every gardener.
Start with a bench that fits your site and tasks
Plan the work surface around the jobs you do—filling containers, repotting, or starting seedlings—and the available space. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) gives about 2 feet deep by 6 feet long as a popular example, not a universal standard. Its workshop suggests a work height of 32 inches or roughly hip height; treat that as a starting point and adjust for the person who will use the bench.
Before building or buying, consider the ground beneath it and whether the location is covered or exposed. Concrete, soil, and other surfaces can affect how firmly a bench sits. Materials listed in the UC ANR workshop include cedar, redwood, composite, reclaimed fencing, and repurposed materials. Choose with the location and upkeep in mind rather than assuming one material suits every site. UC ANR’s Potting Bench Workshop covers planning dimensions, location, materials, and features.
Make the work area comfortable and accessible
Set the height and reach to suit the gardener, not an assumed standard user. Oregon State University Extension Service recommends: “Have a potting bench or table nearby to work in a standing position for some tasks.” A nearby table can support standing work, while a seated setup or a mix of seated and standing tasks may be more comfortable for others. Keep frequently used supplies within easy reach and leave enough clear worktop to handle pots without crowding.

Growing media suited to containers
Use a container-growing medium appropriate to the plants and their containers. Good media support roots, hold moisture and nutrients, and allow air and water to move through the mix. University of New Hampshire Extension describes light, fluffy media that retain moisture and nutrients while draining well. It offers one DIY example made with equal parts peat moss or coconut coir, screened compost, and perlite or vermiculite. That is an example, not a universal recipe; plant needs and available ingredients vary. See UNH Extension’s container gardening guidance and the University of Maryland Extension overview of growing media.

Pots, tools, and a place to stage work
Store the container sizes you use most often where you can reach them, and reserve a clear spot to stage newly filled pots. Plant and container needs differ, so keep a useful range rather than relying on one size. Hooks for hand tools or gloves can free up worktop space; bins can keep smaller supplies together. A handled bucket or basket is useful when you need to move items between storage and the bench.
Storage that suits your supplies
Shelves below or behind the worktop can hold growing-media bags, pots, and other supplies, while bins or a covered tub help keep small items together. For extra growing media, University of Maryland Extension lists a trash can, storage tub, or heavy-duty bags as storage options. Choose based on how much you keep and the conditions where it will be stored; a container that limits exposure may be preferable when moisture or pests are a concern.

Choose add-ons for your workflow
A back or shelf can hold tools, and lower storage can keep bulky supplies off the work surface. Casters can make a bench easier to move, but they change its overall height and should not compromise stability. A sink may help with watering or cleanup if water access and suitable drainage are available at the location. UC ANR lists these as possible features rather than necessities.
Outdoor Living Today, a commercial supplier, also points to a stable base, suitable height, and useful shelving when considering a potting bench. That is vendor guidance, not independent testing or a guarantee of performance. Check a named model’s specifications for any stated load capacity rather than assuming one.
