Yes—a manual IKEA SKARSTA can be motorized by attaching a motor and control system to its existing adjustment shaft. The documented approaches are custom DIY builds, not plug-and-play kits: they require measuring the shaft and mounting space, fabricating and aligning a mount, and setting travel limits. The project examples are useful starting points, but neither establishes manufacturer approval or a design guaranteed to fit every SKARSTA.
How a SKARSTA motor conversion works
The conversion drives the shaft that the original hand crank turns. One documented design uses a DC motor, belt and pulleys, encoder, controller, display and buttons, power components, and a custom motor case. It describes calibrating minimum and maximum desk positions and saving three height presets. See the project documentation.
A separate build also connects a motor to the drive shaft, but uses its own combination of motor, driver, brackets, shaft couplings, power supply, sensor, display, and 3D-printed parts. Its author describes measuring and aligning the mount, then performing an initial run before installing the assembly beneath the desk. See the repository documentation. These are distinct examples, not interchangeable plans or proof that their components will fit your desk.
Parts and measurements to plan
Example components
The first project lists an Arduino Nano, rotary encoder, relays or an H-bridge, GT2 belt, 12 V motor and power supply, step-down module, display, fuse, and fasteners. It suggests either a printed motor pulley or a 6–7 mm shaft coupling, and describes using a 6 mm hex key or modified original handle to connect the motor to the desk. Treat these as that builder’s choices, not a validated specification for every SKARSTA.

Check fit before buying
- Measure the drive shaft and verify the coupling dimensions against the actual shaft.
- Measure the available space under the desk for the motor, belt or coupling, controller, and wiring.
- Check that the proposed motor and controller ratings suit the mechanism and the load you expect the desk to carry; the project parts list is not a universal sizing guide.
- Plan a rigid, secure mount that keeps the motor aligned with the drive shaft.
- Choose suitable electrical protection, including a fuse appropriate to the build. The cited project includes a fuse, but does not certify a complete electrical design for your setup.
No manufacturer compatibility chart or universally compatible conversion kit is established by the documented builds.
Mounting, calibration and operation
- Check the desk first. Make sure it is level and that its manual height adjustment moves smoothly. The first project warns that an uneven desk or jerky manual adjustment may affect the modification.
- Measure and align. Fit the motor and coupling or belt arrangement to the measured shaft, and secure the mount so the motor does not pull out of alignment.
- Test before final installation. Follow the second builder’s example of doing an initial run and confirming the motor turns correctly before mounting the assembly under the desk.
- Set travel limits. Calibrate the minimum and maximum positions as the project design describes. Do not assume the desk will stop safely at its endpoints without correctly configured controls.
- Watch for stalls and end stops. The first project documents a motor-stall error and warns that a pulley may be damaged if the desk reaches its minimum or maximum height.
What a DIY conversion does—and does not—provide
This is a mechanical and electrical modification, not a factory accessory. Calibration and error handling in a maker project are design features, not independent safety certification. The sources do not establish factory collision protection for a converted SKARSTA, and a named parts list does not guarantee safe operation. If you are not comfortable measuring, fabricating a mount, aligning moving parts, and configuring the electrical controls, replacing the desk with a factory-built electric model is the more straightforward route.

Factory-built electric alternative
IKEA Norway lists an electric TROTTEN desk, article 496.218.71, with a single-motor lift, collision detection that stops and reverses movement by 30–50 mm, and a stated maximum load of 50 kg. Those specifications apply to that product listing and market; they are not features of a SKARSTA conversion. Check your local IKEA listing for availability and current specifications.
