Industrial foundries melt it with equipment such as cupola or induction furnaces, then manage alloying, molten-metal treatment, pouring, and feeding the casting. The available sources do not establish a safe home-furnace design or procedure, so they cannot support a DIY build plan. They do establish why moisture and containment deserve particular attention: water meeting molten material can trigger a violent steam explosion.
Can a home foundry melt cast iron?
The sources here do not verify a particular home-scale furnace, fuel, capacity, or operating method for melting cast iron. Industrial practice shows that cast iron is routinely melted, but it does not establish that an improvised or commonly used hobby furnace can do so safely or reliably.
Cast-iron production also involves more than melting metal. ASM International’s Cast Iron Science and Technology describes foundry work that includes melting, alloying, molten-metal treatment, pouring, and designing gating and risering systems to feed castings. That scope matters: a furnace capable of producing a melt would not, by itself, establish that a casting process is controlled or safe.
How do industrial foundries melt cast iron?
Cupola furnaces
The International Finance Corporation describes the cupola as a common industrial furnace for cast-iron melting. It is a refractory-lined vertical shaft that uses coke and combustion air. Charge enters near the top; molten iron moves downward while exhaust gases travel upward. This is a description of industrial equipment and operation, not a home-furnace design recommendation. Induction furnaces
The U.S. Department of Energy identifies cupola and induction furnaces as the primary melting methods used by iron metalcasting facilities in its 2004 report. ASM’s 2017 handbook chapter abstract surveys cupola, channel-induction, and induction-crucible furnaces. These references establish industrial methods; they do not compare home-scale equipment or validate a household implementation. The DOE report’s figures are historical and industry-specific: in its analysis, iron castings represented 68% of metalcasting production tons shipped and iron casting production consumed 49.5% of the energy. They are not current market statistics or estimates for home foundries. A foundry’s published capability is similarly facility-specific: Laroche Foundry reports that each of its two induction furnaces holds 6,000 lb and can heat cast iron to 1,350°C (2,460°F) in a little over an hour. Why moisture is a critical hazard
Water contacting molten material can rapidly turn to steam and produce an explosive event. OSHA’s January 25, 2023 release describes two 2022 Ohio foundry incidents: in one, water and superheated material caused a steam explosion that severely injured a supervisor; in another, water became encapsulated in molten metal. OSHA reported failures involving containment and protective equipment in the first incident. The agency warned that “mixing water and molten material can be a serious, if not deadly mistake.” OSHA, January 25, 2023.
A separate OSHA citation concerning Elyria Foundry records an explosion after a moisture-containing scrap casting was placed in a melting furnace on January 12, 2012. The explosion damaged the building and furnace; an employee suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns. The citation identifies preheating charge materials and tools to remove surface and entrained moisture as one feasible abatement method in that workplace case. It is evidence of the hazard and an industrial control, not a complete checklist for home casting. OSHA Elyria Foundry citation; OSHA regulation reference cited in the record.

What the evidence does—and does not—support
- It supports: recognizing cupola and induction furnaces as established industrial methods, and treating moisture in charge materials, tools, or the surrounding process as a potentially catastrophic hazard.
- It does not establish: a suitable home-furnace design, fuel, capacity, refractory, accessories, operating procedure, solo-work method, or complete PPE specification.
- It does not establish: that buying a particular piece of protective equipment makes home melting safe. The cited workplace incidents cannot be converted into a complete home safety protocol.
For technical study, ASM International’s 2017 Cast Iron Science and Technology is a specialist reference that includes material on melting furnaces and gray-iron production. The source establishes the book’s scope, not that it is a beginner’s manual or a guide to building a small furnace. ASM International handbook information.
