Milwaukee’s proposed The Edison tower was designed to reach 375 feet and 31 stories, potentially making it the world’s tallest timber building if completed as planned. But construction was reported halted in September 2025, and the available sources do not confirm that work has resumed. The project’s record status is therefore prospective, not achieved.
What is The Edison?
The project is a planned residential high-rise at 1005 N. Edison St. in Milwaukee. Thornton Tomasetti, the project engineer, calls it The Edison and identifies The Neutral Project as its owner. New Atlas refers to it as Neutral 1005 N Edison St. Thornton Tomasetti’s project page lists 31 stories, a height of 375 feet and 378 apartments. New Atlas reported 350 residences, so the apartment count differs between sources; the engineer’s project page gives the larger figure.
The record claim is also conditional. Thornton Tomasetti describes the tower as “poised to become the world’s tallest timber building when the residential project tops out.” That is a project-team expectation tied to completion, not evidence that the building has topped out or claimed a verified record.
Has construction resumed?
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Skyscraper Center listing dates a reported halt to September 19, 2025, after foundation work. New Atlas also reported a halt, attributing it to financial concerns. The sources available do not establish whether construction restarted after that date, so it would be premature to describe the tower as actively rising or to give a guaranteed completion year.

- The Timber Cutter is a helpful tool for cutting 1/8" lightweight wooden sticks such as balsa wood. Recommended for bridge and tower building as well as other model projects.
- SAFETY FIRST. The see-through safety guard protects fingers from the blade but still allows you to see where you're cutting.
- CLEAN CUT. A single-edged razor blade proivdes a clean and accurate way cut lumber. Tool recommended for cutting 1/8" lighweight balsa wood sticks.
- CUTTING GUIDE. Miter marks are molded into the base to use as a reference when making angled cuts.
- PERFECT FOR MODEL PROJECTS. The Timber Cutter is the ideal tool to assist in balsa wood model builds such as framing kits, bridges, and towers.
How does The Edison compare with Ascent MKE?
Ascent, also in Milwaukee, provides a completed local comparison. Thornton Tomasetti lists it as completed in 2022, with 25 stories, a height of 284 feet and 259 apartments. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources describes its structure as 19 mass-timber stories above a six-story concrete podium.
| Project | Status in cited sources | Height and stories | Structural information |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Edison | Planned; work reported halted in September 2025. Later restart not established. | 375 ft; 31 stories, per Thornton Tomasetti. | New Atlas describes a design using cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (glulam), with concrete reinforcement anticipated. These are reported design intentions, not confirmed as-built details; Thornton Tomasetti’s project page does not give a final structural breakdown. |
| Ascent MKE | Completed in 2022, per Thornton Tomasetti. | 284 ft; 25 stories, per Thornton Tomasetti. | 19 mass-timber stories above a six-story concrete podium, per the Wisconsin DNR. |
The planned Edison would be taller than Ascent, but comparing the towers does not by itself settle a global “tallest” record. Definitions of timber and mass timber, the treatment of concrete portions, and whether a project is completed all affect such claims.

What timber construction is planned?
New Atlas describes The Edison’s proposed structure as incorporating CLT panels and glulam, with concrete reinforcement anticipated. CLT is made by layering boards crosswise into structural panels; glulam is formed by bonding layers of timber into structural members. The reported material description concerns the design, not a verified account of what has been installed at the site.
What are the project’s sustainability claims?
New Atlas reported that the project was to pursue PHIUS 2021 Core and Living Building Challenge 4.0 Core certifications. It also quoted a Neutral Project estimate of more than 45% lower embodied-carbon footprint and energy consumption than conventional buildings of similar type and use. That figure is a developer estimate reported by the outlet, not an independently verified performance result; the sources do not establish that either certification has been achieved.

How does the project fit Wisconsin’s timber-building activity?
A Wisconsin DNR report published in 2025 counted 34 mass-timber projects in the state that had been built or were under construction as of December 2024, with 13 more in design. Those statewide figures show a broader building trend, but they do not indicate that work on The Edison is continuing.
