Samsung top-load washers do not all share the same cycles, controls or error-code meanings. Use your washer’s exact model code to find its manual, then use this guide for the common choices and maintenance steps: select a cycle for the load, run Self Clean or Pure Cycle with an empty tub, and troubleshoot odors or poor spinning without assuming one model’s instructions fit every machine.
How to choose a cycle
Start with the laundry and the options available on your specific washer. Consider the fabric and soil level, load size, and the temperature and spin settings offered for that cycle. Check the model manual before relying on a cycle name or setting; availability and controls vary by model.
For example, Samsung’s WA40J3000AW product sheet lists Normal, Heavy Duty, Colors/Dark, Delicates/Hand Wash, Quick Wash, Self Clean, Rinse and Spin, and Spin Only. Those are options for that model, not a universal list for Samsung top-load washers. See the WA40J3000AW product sheet, and consult your own manual for cycle descriptions and limits.
How to clean the washer tub
Run the built-in cleaning cycle
- Make sure the tub is empty. Samsung warns not to run Self Clean with laundry inside.
- Select Self Clean, Pure Cycle or Self Clean+, depending on the name used on your model. Samsung says a built-in cleaning cycle takes approximately one hour on top-load washers.
- Do not add a cleaner for routine Self Clean use. Samsung recommends running the cycle about once per month if the washer has not displayed a reminder. Reminder timing varies by model; Samsung says it appears after 20 top-load washes, with some variation.
- If suds or residue remain afterward, Samsung advises running Self Clean again.
Samsung says some models do not include Self Clean or Pure Cycle. For those washers, a washing-machine cleaner may be used according to the cleaner manufacturer’s directions; it is optional, not a substitute to add to routine Self Clean. Samsung’s washer-cleaning guidance explains the cycle and alternatives.

Keep the tub and dispenser dry
Wipe the washer’s surface and detergent drawer as needed. After use, leave the lid open so the tub can dry. Use HE detergent and avoid using more detergent than directed; buildup and residue can contribute to odor. Samsung’s washer FAQ also covers maintenance reminders.
What to do when the washer smells bad
Musty odor or visible mold
A musty smell or visible mold calls for Samsung’s odor procedure, not just assumptions about routine tub cleaning. Its troubleshooting steps include removing remaining water with Spin Only, using a chlorine-bleach procedure in the detergent compartment—not the bleach compartment—and starting Self Clean immediately. After the cycle, wipe away residue, run Rinse+Spin, repeat if residue remains, and leave the lid open to dry. Never run Self Clean with laundry in the tub.
Dispenser designs and instructions can differ, so check the manual for your exact model before using bleach. If the smell remains after several attempts, contact Samsung support. Samsung’s odor troubleshooting page gives the model-specific procedure.
Sewage or sulfur odor
A sewage or sulfur smell can point to an incorrectly inserted drain hose and siphoning. Check the installation instructions for your exact washer and confirm the hose is positioned as specified. Samsung’s odor guidance gives different insertion measurements in its correction and prevention instructions, so there is no single measurement to apply universally. The applicable installation requirements for your model should govern.

How to fix an unbalanced load or poor spin
An unbalanced load can cause slow spinning, a mid-cycle stop or an error. Small loads may collect on one side; large absorbent items may tangle. Try these steps before assuming a part has failed:
- Pause the washer if needed and untangle the items.
- Redistribute the laundry evenly around the tub, then restart the cycle.
- If the load remains unbalanced, reduce the spin speed if your model and cycle allow it.
- Check that the selected cycle suits the load and that the load size is appropriate.
Load size, distribution and cycle choice can all affect spinning. See Samsung’s poor-spin troubleshooting for additional guidance.

Samsung washer information and error codes
Do not interpret a code from another Samsung washer as if it necessarily means the same thing on yours. For example, “dc” can indicate different faults across models. Look up the code using the full model code and follow the instructions in that model’s manual or Samsung’s support page: Samsung washing machine information and error codes.
If the same code returns or the washer continues to malfunction after the recommended checks, use Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting or service route. Avoid disassembling the machine or ordering a replacement part without an exact diagnosis.

How to power-cycle a washer with a minor glitch
Samsung says washers do not have a dedicated Reset button. For a minor glitch, it suggests unplugging the washer or switching off its circuit breaker for one to five minutes, then restoring power. This power cycle is not a diagnosis or a guaranteed fix; use model-specific troubleshooting if the problem persists. Samsung’s washer FAQ includes its reset guidance.
