Why Some Tree Trunks Are Painted White, and When It Actually Helps

White tree trunks are usually about bark protection, not decoration. A breathable white coating can reflect harsh sun, reduce bark temperature swings, and protect young or newly exposed trees from sunscald.

White paint on a tree trunk is usually there for one practical reason: to protect bark from sun injury. On young trees, thin-barked trees, citrus, orchard trees, and trunks suddenly exposed by pruning or construction, a white coating reflects sunlight and helps moderate bark temperature. That can reduce sunburn in hot weather and winter sunscald in cold, sunny climates.

The right material matters. For most landscape and orchard use, the standard recommendation is white interior latex paint diluted 1:1 with clean water, or a ready-to-use, non-toxic tree trunk coating labeled for trees. Do not use oil-based paint, tar, asphalt sealer, dark paint, or random exterior coatings. Paint can help protect bark, but it does not heal decay, fix irrigation problems, stop girdling roots, or make a tree immune to construction damage.

On our job sites, we treat whitewashing as one part of tree protection, not as a magic coating. If grading, demolition, driveway work, patio installation, canopy raising, or removal of a nearby shade tree suddenly exposes a trunk to afternoon sun, that tree may need temporary shade, irrigation review, root-zone protection, and sometimes white trunk paint before damage shows up.

What White Tree Paint Does

Tree bark is living protective tissue. It insulates the cambium layer underneath, moves water and nutrients through the tree’s vascular system, and shields the trunk from insects, weather, and mechanical injury. When bark gets overheated or rapidly warmed and cooled, it can crack, split, or die back in patches.

White paint works by reflecting solar radiation. A pale coating absorbs less heat than exposed dark bark, especially on the south and southwest sides of the trunk where afternoon sun is strongest. That reflection lowers bark temperature and reduces the severity of temperature swings.

The benefit is most obvious on young trees because their bark is usually thinner and smoother. A mature oak, pine, or maple with thick, rugged bark may not need paint at all. A newly planted apple, citrus, maple, ash, honeylocust, linden, or ornamental tree with thin bark is a different situation. The lower 18 to 48 inches of trunk can take a beating from hot pavement, reflected light, and winter sun.

In practical terms, white trunk paint is used to reduce three related problems:

  • Summer sunburn: Bark overheats in direct sun, often after leaf loss, heavy pruning, or new exposure.
  • Winter sunscald: Bark warms during sunny winter days, then freezes rapidly after sunset, causing tissue damage and splitting.
  • Southwest injury: Damage concentrated on the south or southwest side of a trunk because that side receives the strongest afternoon sun.

White paint is common in orchards and hot regions because growers are managing hundreds or thousands of thin-barked trunks. In a residential front yard, it can look unusual, so some homeowners prefer seasonal Tree wraps or guards. The biology is the same either way: reduce temperature stress on vulnerable bark.

Why Bark Gets Sunscald and Sunburn

Sunscald is not just “too much sun.” It is usually a combination of exposure, bark thickness, temperature swings, water stress, and site changes.

In winter, the southwest side of a trunk can warm significantly on a clear afternoon. That warmth can bring bark tissue out of dormancy. When the temperature drops after sunset, the same tissue freezes quickly. Repeated cycles can kill strips of bark. Months later, the homeowner may see vertical cracking, sunken bark, peeling bark, or dead patches.

In summer, the problem is more direct. Bark heats up beyond what the tissue can tolerate. This is especially common when a tree has lost leaf cover or when the trunk was previously shaded and is suddenly exposed. A tree that looked fine before a project can be injured after the site around it changes.

Construction and Landscape Changes That Raise Risk

This is the part many homeowners miss. Tree trunks do not only sunburn in orchards. They also get injured after normal residential construction and landscape work.

We watch for trunk exposure whenever a project changes shade patterns. Common triggers include removing a garage, shed, fence, hedge, or neighboring tree; raising the canopy too aggressively; installing a new driveway, walk, pool deck, or patio; adding light-colored concrete or pavers that reflect heat; and grading soil away from a tree that had lower trunk shade.

South and west exposures deserve special attention. If a young tree has been shaded for 3 to 5 years and suddenly gets full afternoon sun after demolition or clearing, its bark has not had time to adapt. A $20 can of tree coating and a 30-minute application may prevent damage that later requires a $300 arborist visit or removal of a failed tree.

Tree Types Most Likely to Benefit

Whitewashing makes the most sense for young, thin-barked, newly planted, recently pruned, or newly exposed trees. It is also common on fruit trees and citrus in hot climates.

Good candidates include young apple, peach, plum, cherry, citrus, maple, linden, honeylocust, ash, and other ornamental trees with smooth bark. A tree with lower scaffold limbs removed during canopy raising may also qualify, even if it is older. The key question is not just species. It is whether the bark now receives direct sun it did not receive before.

Mature trees with thick bark usually do not need white paint unless pruning, storm damage, or site clearing exposed bark that had been shaded for years. Painting every mature trunk in a yard is usually unnecessary and can look like a cosmetic fix instead of sound tree care.

The Right Paint for Tree Trunks

Use breathable, water-based material. The common extension recommendation is white interior latex paint diluted 1:1 with clean water. That means 1 quart of paint mixed with 1 quart of water, or 1 gallon of paint mixed with 1 gallon of water. Stir until the mixture is uniform.

  • Country of manufacture: United States
  • Manufacturer: DEWITT
  • Dewitt tree wrap protects trees from scorching, and from trimmer and mower damage
  • Tree wrap is made of polypropylene fabric and easily conforms to fit any tree shape or bark texture

You can also use a ready-to-use tree trunk coating labeled for trees. These products are made for bark protection and may be more convenient when you only have a few trunks to treat. In 2026, a 1-gallon Arizona’s Best tree trunk paint was listed around $15.37 at Home Depot and $27.65 at Zoro, with pricing varying by retailer, shipping, and region.

Do not use oil-based paint. Do not use tar, asphalt emulsion, roofing coating, pruning sealer, wound dressing, or dark paint. Dark coatings can increase heat absorption, which is the opposite of the goal. Heavy sealers can interfere with bark function and trap moisture against tissue that needs to breathe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interior Latex vs Exterior Paint

Interior latex is commonly recommended because it is water-based, breathable, and less aggressive than many exterior coatings. Many exterior paints contain additives intended for siding, trim, mildew resistance, and long weather exposure. Those features may be useful on a house but not on living bark.

If you buy a dedicated tree trunk paint, follow the label. If you use ordinary paint, choose basic white interior latex and dilute it 1:1 with water unless your local extension office or arborist gives a different site-specific recommendation.

Can You Use Tan Instead of White?

Sometimes. White reflects the most sunlight, which is why it is the standard. If aesthetics matter in a front yard, a lighter tan tree-protection coating may be acceptable if it is labeled or recommended for trees and still reflects heat. Test a small area first. Avoid dark beige, brown, gray, green, or black coatings because they can absorb more heat.

How to Paint a Tree Trunk Correctly

The job is simple, but details matter. You are coating the bark to reflect sun, not sealing a wound or decorating the tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a dry trunk. Brush away loose dirt, mud, and loose flaking material by hand or with a soft brush. Do not pressure wash the bark. Do not scrape into living tissue. If bark is oozing, deeply cracked, soft, foul-smelling, full of borer holes, or actively peeling, diagnose the problem before painting.

Mix white interior latex paint and clean water at a 1:1 ratio in a clean bucket. For example, mix 2 cups paint with 2 cups water for a few young trees, or 1 gallon paint with 1 gallon water for a larger batch. Use a 2- to 4-inch brush for young trunks and branch crotches. A small roller can work on smooth, larger trunks, but brushes do a better job on rough bark and tight angles.

Paint from the soil line up to the first main scaffold limbs on young trees. On many residential trees, that is about 18 to 36 inches high. On young orchard trees, citrus, or taller exposed trunks, it may be 48 inches or more. Cover the southwest side thoroughly. In high-risk sites, coat the full circumference of the trunk because reflected heat can come from pavement, walls, gravel, and light-colored hardscape.

Do not pile mulch against the painted trunk afterward. Keep mulch pulled back about 3 to 6 inches from the trunk flare. A mulch volcano keeps bark wet, encourages decay, and invites insects. The trunk flare should remain visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Timing

Apply before the high-risk season. In hot climates, paint before summer heat arrives. In cold, sunny climates, paint in fall before winter freeze-thaw cycles. After construction or heavy pruning, apply protection before the trunk is exposed to several weeks of new afternoon sun.

Plan on a small job taking 10 to 20 minutes per young tree once materials are ready. A larger, rough-barked trunk or a tree with multiple low scaffold limbs can take 30 minutes or more. Dry time depends on temperature, humidity, and dilution, but latex coatings commonly become dry to the touch within a few hours in mild weather.

How Often to Reapply

Reapply when the coating weathers away, flakes off, or no longer reflects sunlight well. In exposed landscapes, that may be once a year. In orchards or harsh sun, inspection before each high-risk season is sensible. If the tree grows quickly, new bark may appear above or between coated sections, and that exposed tissue may need touch-up.

Cost to Paint Tree Trunks in 2026

DIY trunk painting is inexpensive. Most homeowners spend more time gathering materials than applying the coating. Professional service makes sense when the painting is bundled with pruning, planting, diagnosis, or a broader tree-health visit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item or Service Typical 2026 Cost Notes
Ready-to-use tree trunk paint, 1 gallon About $15.37 to $27.65 Retail examples vary by store, region, shipping, and availability.
Basic white interior latex Varies by brand and size Dilute 1:1 with water; a quart may cover several small trees.
Brush, bucket, gloves, stir stick, drop cloth About $10 to $30 Often less if you already own basic painting supplies.
DIY labor time 10 to 30 minutes per tree Depends on trunk diameter, bark texture, and height painted.
Small professional inspection and painting visit Often $100 to $300+ Minimum service-call economics usually control small jobs.
Tree trimming when exposure follows pruning About $430 to $700 per tree on average Small ornamental trees may be around $75; large trees over 60 ft can exceed $1,800.

Professional tree care is priced differently from a can of paint. The latest indexed BLS labor context in the research pack reports tree trimmers and pruners at a $25.41 mean hourly wage and $23.59 median hourly wage. That is wage data, not what a company bills a homeowner. A tree-care business also has trucks, saws, insurance, workers’ compensation, fuel, training, downtime, overhead, and profit. TCIA business guidance shows a sample three-person crew billing target around $412.50 per hour once those costs are included.

That is why a contractor or arborist rarely wants to drive across town just to brush paint on one 2-inch trunk. The better value is bundling it with work already needed: planting, structural pruning, irrigation correction, pest diagnosis, construction protection, or an annual tree-health inspection.

White Paint, Tree Wraps, and Trunk guards Compared

White paint is not the only way to protect bark. Wraps and guards can also reduce winter sunscald and mechanical injury, but each option has tradeoffs.

Option Best Use Main Advantage Main Caution
White diluted interior latex paint Young, thin-barked, fruit, citrus, or newly exposed trunks Reflects sun, inexpensive, common in orchards Can look unusual in formal front-yard landscapes
Ready-to-use tree trunk coating Homeowners who want a labeled product Convenient and designed for tree use Costs more than diluted basic latex in some markets
Tree wrap Winter sunscald protection on young trees Less visually stark than white paint Often should be installed in fall and removed in spring
Trunk guard Mower, string-trimmer, and animal protection Good mechanical barrier Must not constrict the trunk or trap moisture
Temporary shade cloth Construction or sudden exposure situations Useful when paint is not desired aesthetically Must be secured without damaging trunk or roots

Wraps are useful, but they are not set-and-forget. Many extension sources advise installing wraps in fall and removing them in spring. Left on through the growing season, wraps can trap moisture, hide insects, rub bark, or constrict a growing trunk. If you use a plastic guard, inspect it regularly and keep it loose enough for growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For construction sites, temporary shade cloth can be a good bridge solution. If a driveway, patio, or demolition project suddenly opens a trunk to western sun, shade cloth can reduce shock while the tree adjusts. The cloth should be supported on stakes or a temporary frame, not stapled or tightly tied to the trunk.

What White Tree Paint Will Not Fix

White paint is preventive. It is not medicine for every trunk problem.

It will not heal existing bark wounds. Once bark is dead, cracked, or missing, the tree has to compartmentalize that injury over time. Paint may hide damage visually, but it does not rebuild living tissue. If a trunk already has deep cracking, oozing, fungal growth, loose bark, or sawdust-like frass from borers, coating it without diagnosis can delay the real fix.

It will not correct drought stress. A newly planted tree often needs consistent watering for 1 to 3 growing seasons while roots establish. A painted trunk with a dry root ball is still a stressed tree. In many landscapes, the better tree-health investment is a watering schedule, a proper mulch ring, and protection from soil compaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It will not prevent mower or string-trimmer damage. One careless pass with a trimmer can girdle a young trunk. Keep turf away from the base of the tree, use a mulch ring, and avoid cutting equipment near the bark. A trunk guard may be useful where maintenance crews work close to young trees.

It will not make heavy pruning harmless. Removing too much canopy exposes bark and reduces the tree’s ability to feed itself. Paint may reduce sun injury after pruning, but it is not a license to strip interior branches or raise the canopy too aggressively. Structural pruning should follow arborist-informed standards, especially on valuable shade trees.

Does White Paint Stop Borers or Insects?

Some fruit-growing guidance notes that painted trunks may provide a secondary barrier effect against certain borers. That does not make white paint a complete pest-control program. The main supported use is sun and temperature moderation.

Insects often attack stressed trees. Drought, sunburned bark, mower wounds, poor planting depth, compacted soil, and over-pruning all make pest problems more likely. If you see holes, sap, gum, frass, loose bark, canopy thinning, or branch dieback, identify the pest and the stress factor before treating.

Do not mix pesticides into paint unless the pesticide label explicitly allows that use. In the United States, the pesticide label is the law for how that product can be used. If the label does not permit mixing into trunk paint or applying to that tree species in that manner, do not improvise.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when the tree is young, healthy, accessible from the ground, and you are using a straightforward white interior latex and water mixture or a labeled tree trunk coating. A homeowner can usually paint several young trunks in an hour with $25 to $60 in materials and tools.

DIY also makes sense for newly planted fruit trees, small ornamental trees, and backyard citrus where the trunk is under about 4 inches in diameter and the bark looks healthy. Work from the ground. Do not climb. Do not use ladders against young trees.

Hire an ISA Certified Arborist or qualified tree-care professional when the tree is valuable, mature, declining, cracked, oozing, peeling, leaning, or showing signs of insects or decay. Bring in a pro if the tree was affected by excavation, trenching, grade change, utility work, driveway installation, foundation work, or major pruning. Those situations involve roots, structure, drainage, and tree health, not just bark color.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For construction projects, include trunk exposure in the preconstruction tree survey. Before demolition or grading removes shade, identify trees that will receive new afternoon sun. The protection plan may include tree fencing at the root zone, no-storage zones, temporary irrigation, shade cloth, careful pruning, and whitewashing where appropriate. Doing that before work starts is cheaper than trying to rescue a stressed tree after the bark splits.

Safety, Permits, and Street Trees

Painting a small backyard tree is usually not a permit issue, but street trees and public right-of-way trees are different. Many cities regulate pruning, removal, excavation, and sometimes any work that affects trees near the street. Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Spokane, Washington are examples of cities with tree permitting processes. Your local rules may be different.

If the tree is between the sidewalk and curb, in a public easement, part of a homeowners association landscape, or protected by a development agreement, check before working. Do not assume that a tree is yours to alter just because you mow around it.

Use basic job-site safety. Wear gloves and eye protection when mixing paint. Keep paint and rinse water out of storm drains. Do not paint in freezing weather, during rain, or on wet bark. Keep children and pets away from wet coating until it dries. If a ladder would be required, reassess the job; trunk painting should usually be ground-level work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake is using the wrong product. Oil-based paint, tar, asphalt sealer, pruning sealer, wound dressing, and dark coatings can create new problems. The goal is reflection and breathability, not sealing the tree like lumber.

The second mistake is painting for no reason. A mature, thick-barked tree in a shaded lawn may not benefit. Focus on young trees, thin bark, fruit trees, citrus, newly planted trees, heavily pruned trees, and trunks newly exposed by site changes.

Another common mistake is painting over a diagnosis. If bark is wet, diseased, loose, soft, or actively decaying, do not cover it and hope for the best. The tree may need pest identification, irrigation correction, root-collar inspection, soil improvement, or pruning by someone who understands tree structure.

Finally, do not use paint to excuse aggressive pruning. If a tree was over-pruned and now needs paint because the trunk is exposed, the paint is only damage control. Better pruning would have preserved enough canopy to shade the bark naturally.

Bottom Line

White tree trunks are not a fad and not usually decoration. Done correctly, whitewashing is a low-cost bark-protection method that reflects sunlight and helps reduce sunburn, sunscald, and southwest injury on vulnerable trees.

Use it where it makes sense: young trees, thin-barked species, fruit trees, citrus, newly planted trees, and trunks suddenly exposed by pruning, construction, paving, or removal of shade. Use white interior latex diluted 1:1 with water, or a labeled tree trunk coating. Paint from the soil line to the first main scaffold limbs, keep the trunk flare clear, and inspect before each high-risk season.

For a healthy young tree, this is an easy DIY job. For a valuable tree with cracking, oozing, decay, insect signs, construction damage, or major exposure changes, get an arborist involved. The paint is cheap. The tree usually is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are tree trunks painted white?

Tree trunks are painted white mainly to reflect sunlight and reduce bark temperature swings. This helps prevent sunburn, winter sunscald, and southwest injury, especially on young, thin-barked, fruit, citrus, or newly exposed trees.

What kind of paint should you use on tree trunks?

Use white interior latex paint diluted 1:1 with clean water, or a ready-to-use non-toxic tree trunk coating labeled for trees. Avoid oil-based paint, exterior coatings with aggressive additives, tar, asphalt sealer, wound dressing, and dark paint.

Is white paint good or bad for trees?

White paint can be good for trees when used correctly on vulnerable bark. It is not needed on every tree, and the wrong coating can cause problems. Use breathable, water-based white material and apply it only where sunscald or sunburn risk is realistic.

When is the best time to paint a tree trunk white?

Paint before the high-risk season. In hot climates, apply before summer heat. In cold, sunny climates, apply in fall before winter freeze-thaw cycles. After construction, pruning, or shade removal, protect newly exposed bark before weeks of afternoon sun hit it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can white tree paint stop borers or insects?

White paint may provide a secondary barrier effect in some fruit-tree situations, but it is not a substitute for pest diagnosis or integrated pest management. Do not mix pesticides into paint unless the pesticide label explicitly allows that use.

Do I need a permit to paint or work on a tree near the street?

Possibly. Backyard trees usually are not an issue, but street trees and public right-of-way trees may be regulated by your city. Check local rules before painting, pruning, excavating around, or otherwise working on a tree between the sidewalk and curb.
