Use a consistent system of part labels and orientation marks to keep boards aligned through milling and assembly; use a pencil or chalk for removable reminders, and a marking knife when a line must guide a cut or chisel. The right mark depends on whether you need to identify a piece, set its orientation, or define a precise cut.

How to label and orient parts before machining

Start by choosing a reference face and reference edge for each board. Mark them consistently—often with a face-side symbol and an arrow for the reference edge—so you can tell which surfaces should stay oriented the same way as the stock is milled. Give each piece a letter or number that matches the drawing or materials list. Add an arrow or a short label when a part’s orientation would otherwise be unclear.

For successive milling operations, add distinct marks to indicate which face or edge has been jointed or otherwise processed. That makes it easier to keep track of the remaining work and avoid treating a different surface as the reference by mistake.

When preparing a panel glue-up, arrange the boards for the desired grain match, then mark the group and their orientation before moving them. A simple set of matching marks helps restore the intended order after the boards are separated.

Marking Knife for Woodworking, Wood Marking Knife with High Carbon Steel
  • CRISP REFERENCE LINES - This woodworking marking knife cuts a fine, clean reference line into the wood along rulers, squares and dovetail guides before sawing or chiseling. Unlike a pencil mark, the scored groove gives your saw or chisel a defined reference to follow for cleaner, more controlled joinery work.
  • HAND-HONED HIGH CARBON STEEL - The CNC-ground, hand-honed high carbon steel blade severs surface wood fibers as it scribes. When used across the grain before sawing or chiseling, the cut line helps reduce tear-out and supports cleaner shoulders and edges in dovetails, tenons, and cabinet joinery.
  • MARK FROM EITHER SIDE - The double-bevel point allows you to scribe along either side of a square, ruler, dovetail guide, or template. Suitable for both left- and right-handed woodworkers, with no need to switch tools when changing marking direction.
  • ROSEWOOD GRIP AND LEATHER SHEATH - The contoured rosewood handle provides a stable, comfortable grip for light first passes and controlled follow-up strokes. Brass pins secure the handle, while the included genuine leather sheath helps protect the blade and sharp point during storage and transport.
  • BUILT FOR PRECISION JOINERY - Ideal for dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, cabinetry, furniture making, edge transfer and precision layout work. Use a pencil for rough measurements, then use the marking knife for the reference lines that determine the final cut and fit.

Choose a marking medium that suits the next operation

Tool or medium Best use Trade-off
Pencil Part labels, orientation marks, and layout on stock that will be sawn, planed, or jointed. Visible and erasable, but the line has width. A fine mechanical pencil can keep line weight consistent.
Chalk Removable marks on rough stock or fully machined parts that should be cleaned before final sanding; it can also make a knife line easier to see on dark wood. Easy to remove, but less suited than a knife to registering a cutting edge.
Marking knife Precise cut lines and joinery shoulders that need to guide a saw or chisel. Creates a fine scored line that severs fibers, but it is less erasable than pencil.
Pen or stamp A lasting identification mark placed where it will be hidden after assembly. Use only when the mark can remain without affecting the visible finish.

As a practical rule, use pencil where machining will remove the mark, and chalk where you want a mark to come off easily before final sanding. Reserve pens or stamps for hidden surfaces. WOOD Magazine’s guidance highlights the mismatch between a very fine measurement and a broad pencil point: “Does it make sense to measure to 1⁄64”, and then mark a line with a pencil point that’s twice that width?” (WOOD Magazine, “Razor-fine layout lines”).

Make precise cut and joinery lines

For a final cut line or joint shoulder, register a marking knife against a reliable straightedge or square. Begin with a light pass; deepen the score only when necessary. The resulting line severs fibers and gives a chisel a precise edge to register against. It can also help a saw blade track along the layout line. Marc Adams, a woodworking instructor quoted by WOOD Magazine, describes a knife or gauge line as a reference for a chisel and notes that an accurately knifed line can help a saw track better (WOOD Magazine).

A scored line may be harder to see than pencil. On light wood, darken it with pencil if needed; on dark wood, chalk dust can make the line stand out. These visibility aids do not replace the score as the precise reference.

Use the right tool for the line’s geometry

Square: extend a line at a right angle

Use a square to carry a cut line across a face or onto an edge, or to mark perpendicular to an edge or end. Keep the square flat against the workpiece and tight to its reference edge as you draw or score. For critical work, check that the square is accurate: a small error in the tool or its contact with the board carries into the layout. Woodcraft notes that for unquestioned accuracy, the angle must be 90 degrees, not slightly more or less (Woodcraft, “Guide to Accurate Measuring and Marking for Woodworking”).

Marking gauge: repeat a line parallel to an edge

Set a marking gauge from the chosen reference edge to lay out a consistent parallel line, such as a joinery baseline. Keep the gauge referenced to the same edge as you work; changing the reference changes the result.

Awl and dividers: transfer points and spacing

Use an awl to make a small starter indent for a fastener when appropriate. Dividers transfer spacing from one point or part to another without repeatedly reading a dimension, which can help keep repeated marks consistent.

A simple marking sequence for a project

  1. Identify the stock. Match each piece to its drawing or materials-list entry with a letter or number.
  2. Set orientation. Mark the reference face and edge, then add arrows or labels where the intended direction is not obvious.
  3. Track machining. Add distinct marks as faces or edges are jointed or otherwise processed, so the reference surfaces remain clear.
  4. Mark the work. Use pencil or chalk for removable labels and lines; use a square for perpendicular lines, a gauge for parallel lines, and a knife for precise cut or joinery lines.
  5. Reassemble in order. Before moving boards for a glue-up, mark the group and orientation so the intended arrangement can be restored.
  6. Clear removable marks. Remove chalk from machined parts before final sanding; allow for pencil marks to disappear in the planned sawing, planing, or jointing operation.

Check the mark before cutting

  • Confirm that the part label matches the plan and that the face and edge marks identify the intended references.
  • For a perpendicular line, check the square’s accuracy and keep it fully seated against the workpiece.
  • For a parallel line, set the gauge from the correct edge and maintain that reference throughout the pass.
  • For a knife line, make a shallow test pass if you are unsure how the wood will respond; deepen only as needed.
  • Check that the line is visible enough to follow. Use pencil to darken a knife score on light wood, or chalk dust to highlight it on dark wood.
