Laars Boiler Troubleshooting: Essential Tips for Quick Fixes

Laars boilers do not share one universal troubleshooting chart. Identify the model, use its matching manual, and treat gas or recurring faults as qualified-service issues.

For a safe, useful Laars boiler troubleshooting step, first identify the exact model and copy the full alert or lockout message from its display. Laars boilers use different controls and manuals, so a reset or repair that applies to one product family may not apply to another. If you smell gas or the burner is behaving abnormally, stop troubleshooting and follow the safety instructions below.

What to do first when a Laars boiler has a fault

  1. Check for an immediate safety concern. If you smell gas, do not try to restart the boiler. Follow the gas-safety instructions in the next section. If the burner is operating abnormally, do not attempt a repair.
  2. Record the exact message. Write down the displayed wording or code, when it appeared, and whether the boiler is heating. A message is useful diagnostic evidence, but is not by itself a complete diagnosis.
  3. Identify the boiler. Read the model and serial number from the rating plate. Do not open the boiler to find it; if you cannot locate the plate safely, ask a qualified technician.
  4. Find the matching manual. Search the Laars document library for the product family and model. Use that manual’s troubleshooting and restart instructions rather than a chart for a different Laars boiler.
  5. Keep your checks observational. Note whether there is a call for heat and whether you know of an obvious interruption you are qualified to check. Share those details and the display message with a qualified boiler technician.

Gas, burner, and carbon-monoxide safety come first

Laars’ NeoTherm Residential Boilers: Installation and Operation Instructions, Document 1252K, states: “This product must be installed and serviced by a professional service technician, qualified in hot water boiler and heater installation and maintenance.” That warning is specific to NeoTherm Residential boilers, but it underscores why boiler service should be left to a qualified professional.

If you smell gas, Laars’ NeoTherm manual says not to light an appliance. It also instructs: “Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.” Contact the gas supplier from a nearby phone and follow the supplier’s instructions. Do not treat a suspected gas leak as a routine troubleshooting problem.

For abnormal burner operation, the manual directs the reader to close the main gas shutoff and contact a heating contractor, gas company, or factory representative. Do not open the boiler, test gas pressure, adjust combustion settings, bridge a safety control, or replace electrical or gas components yourself.

Laars’ NeoTherm residential manual also instructs the installer to verify that at least one carbon-monoxide alarm is installed in the home before operation. An alarm is a safety measure, not a reason to continue operating a boiler that may be unsafe.

What does a Laars boiler error mean?

The meaning depends on the product family, control system, and exact message. In the NeoTherm manual, a lockout means the unit is prevented from starting or running. An alert indicates an abnormal condition that might clear or might progress to a lockout. These definitions describe NeoTherm diagnostics; do not assume that another Laars model uses identical labels or behavior.

Use the displayed text to find the corresponding entry in the manual for your exact model. The manual may explain what condition the control detected and whether the event can reset automatically or requires a manual reset. It does not make a displayed code proof of a single failed part. A recurring or manual-reset fault calls for qualified service, not repeated resets.

Can I reset my Laars boiler?

Only follow the restart procedure in the manual for the exact boiler and fault. The NeoTherm manual has its own restart instructions, while other Laars families use different controls and diagnostic guidance. The model name alone is not enough to establish that a generic reset is appropriate.

Before considering a restart, check the manual’s directions for the displayed condition. Do not reset a boiler when you smell gas, observe abnormal burner operation, or have been told to leave it off. If a fault returns after the manual’s permitted restart, or the condition requires manual reset, stop and contact a qualified boiler technician.

Why is my Laars boiler not heating?

Loss of heat can have several causes, and a display message—or no message—does not identify the failed component on its own. The following examples come from Laars’ OmniTherm manual (Document 1353) only; they must not be applied as repair instructions for NeoTherm or other Laars models.

OmniTherm indication or condition What the manual associates with it Appropriate next step
Flow-switch warning Insufficient flow at the boiler/heater outlet. The manual lists pump, contactor, and pump-fuse problems among possible corrective-action areas. Record the warning and contact qualified service. Do not inspect or replace electrical components unless qualified and authorized.
Low-water cutoff Insufficient water level in the heat exchanger; the manual identifies this as a manual-reset condition. Its listed actions include checking that the system is full and that air has been purged. Have a qualified technician use the exact OmniTherm instructions to assess the system and perform any required reset or service.
High-limit condition Outlet water temperature exceeded the limit. The manual lists system water or air, piping, pump operation, and the limit setting among the checks. Do not adjust a limit or work on the piping or pump yourself; give the message to a qualified technician.

These are model-specific examples, not a universal Laars fault chart. A different model’s display, thresholds, and corrective actions may differ. If the boiler has no obvious display message, tell the technician that too, along with whether there is a call for heat and when the loss of heat began.

Where can I find the right Laars replacement part?

Start with the model and serial number, then locate the matching parts list through the Laars document library. Laars says it does not sell replacement parts directly to consumers or contractors. Its parts guidance directs customers to a local Laars representative or wholesaler and provides a parts identifier. Confirm that a part matches the exact model before ordering; do not assume that a similar-looking component is interchangeable.

When to stop troubleshooting and call a technician

  • You smell gas, see abnormal burner operation, or suspect a carbon-monoxide hazard.
  • The manual identifies the fault as a lockout or manual-reset condition and does not clearly authorize a user restart.
  • The same alert or lockout returns after a restart the correct manual permits.
  • Resolving the issue would require opening the boiler, working on gas or electrical components, changing combustion or limit settings, or servicing water-side equipment.

Give the technician the exact model and serial number, the complete display message, when the fault began, and any observations about the call for heat or interruption. That information helps keep diagnosis focused without risking an unsupported repair.
