The idea joined several infrastructure needs, but historical descriptions and prototype plans do not establish that Watly reached commercial deployment or remains available today.
Who is Marco Antonio Attisani?
Attisani is consistently associated with Watly, although sources describe his role differently. The European Commission’s CORDIS service calls him the project’s founder; a 2015 profile calls him a co-founder; a 2016 article describes him as its creator; and a 2020 interview also calls him a founder. A 2015 profile identified him as an Italian engineer living in Barcelona at the time.
That variation matters: the sources support his central connection to Watly, but not one uniform job title across the project’s history.
What was Watly?
Watly was presented as an integrated, solar-powered response to connected needs for clean water, electricity and communications. CORDIS describes the system as harnessing solar energy to produce electricity, clean wastewater and seawater, and provide internet connectivity. In a 2020 interview, Attisani described Watly’s “thermodynamic computers” as solar-powered systems intended to purify water, generate off-grid electricity and function as telecommunications systems.

These are project descriptions, not independent performance findings. The sources cited here do not establish how much water or electricity a unit produced, its treatment effectiveness, or its operating cost. CORDIS dates Watly’s founding to 2013 and reports European SME Instrument support; grant support is not evidence by itself of commercial success.
How did the Watly prototype develop?
A 2015 interview recounts an early prototype assembled from available components, including a flat thermal solar panel, a thin-film photovoltaic panel and a car battery. The account then describes a shift to an arch-shaped array of solar thermal vacuum tubes, followed by photovoltaic telescopic wings intended to make a larger modular system easier to transport in a standard container.

That future-tense plan documents the ambition at the time; it does not confirm that the units were completed or deployed. A 2016 Italian interview likewise described further prototyping and an intended route to market after development, which was an aspiration rather than proof of a launch.
What happened to Watly?
The sources available for this profile do not establish Watly’s present operating status, commercial availability or deployment. The historical interviews describe a concept, prototype development and plans, but do not provide enough evidence to say whether the project is active today or what became of its later units.

For a construction or infrastructure decision, the concept should not be treated as a currently procurable system on the basis of those accounts. Any evaluation would require current documentation on system availability, installation, water-treatment method and performance, energy output, connectivity, maintenance requirements and operating costs. The sources here do not support a claim that Watly outperformed established treatment methods such as reverse osmosis, nanofiltration or ultraviolet treatment.
What did Attisani say about technology?
In a May 2020 interview, Attisani argued that the pandemic had changed people’s mindset more than technology. He speculated about migration into augmented and virtual reality, technological singularity, and the effects of 5G, genetics, robotics and nanotechnology. These are his views and predictions, not established outcomes.

The interview’s English-language phrasing quotes him as saying, “The 5G will not change the market, but society.” It is best understood as a statement of his outlook at the time, not a verified forecast.
